RE: Campground around Custer S.D. area

Will second the Custer SP suggestion. Custer Gulch is also fine. We like Broken Arrow - south a couple of miles off 16 between the Park and Custer City. There are a ton of RV parks and campgrounds in that part of the Hills. Most of your time there will be out sightseeing and having adventures. You will probably only sleep in the RV anyway.

RE: Parking in Savannah

I concur about the low limbs. DO NOT damage the Live Oaks. Those folks get upset about so much as a scratch on these historic old trees in the old section of town. Some of these limbs hang low. Drop the trailer outside some place and then come into town.

RE: New to Dolly Towing - Help

"I was told to put the car against the front wheel
stops. Is that wrong? There is a bit of a distance between the front and rear stops."
Depends on which end of the tire the ratches are on.
Is there a center pivot plate on the dolly?
With the steering not locking, does the car itself get close or strike the fenders when making a tight turn?

RE: Good Sam Caravan Camping or Not?

I cannot figure why people pay big bucks to drive the same route you can on your own and have to keep a schedue of in by XX o'clock and out by x o'clock. My SIL and her daughter (two coaches) paid a tremendous amount of money for a two weeks on a thirty day trip out west. After their return, they remarked several times how they would have liked to stay a day or two longer at some locations and could not because the caravan was due at the next stop tomorrow. However our camping group used to caravan together (about 4-6 coaches) together. Didn't cost anything but we did have fun talking back and forth on the radios.
This is just my opinion however. If it sounds like a good idea to you, then by all means go for it. You will have an adventure and make new friends certainly.

RE: DirecTV staffed by MORONS!

I am not sure you need an installer. The dish is in place and the previous owner had satellite service? Just go to Best Buy or CW and buy a receiver. Our previous coach had a crank up dish and I just bought the receiver from CW. Talked to the folks from direct on the phone and in 30 minutes I had the service turned on. Direct said they didn't care where the service was, as long as they had a billing address that is where the 'home' area would be for locals.
Are you changing something on the coach by any chance and need the installer?
Dish is much harder to deal with than Direct. Not sure where these guys are from, but they expected us to have a phone line attached to the receiver. They could not tell me how to accomplish that in a mobile environment. We found it very hard to find the satellite(s) of Dish.

Pretty good place and the price is right. Don't figure on staying there during the Perry Fair unless you have reservations. You are right on the pancakes.

RE: Used Class A Dealer Pricing

To quote a friend of mine, "I don't mind the dealer making money, I just don't want him making it all on me". That is pretty much my philosophy. I'm pretty sure I paid too much for my last coach, but when I pull in there now, I am usually met at the door and service treats me pretty good as well.

RE: Darco Polyethylene Vapor Barrier – Who sells it?

Since it will be under the slide and the rest of time the slide will be closed, will you really need the UV resistantance? If you cannot find what you are looking for, go to a building supply and find some TyVek (sp) This is a vapor barrier they wrap new houses in. Works great. In fact I have some here at home if you were in Georgia :( that you could have.

RE: Have seen S/D..would you now go to Yellowstone? 2200mi. trip

If you have never seen Yellowstone, then by all means go. Wish you could have seen it before the fires in - was it 88?. Sort of sad now to see the snags still standing and looking looking like ghosts of what used to be. We have also noticed there seems to be fewer elk than there were years ago when we first traveled there. Wolves maybe?
Still a beautiful place to visting and hang out in for a few days. We found only few places a cell phone can find a signal - if you need to stay in touch back home. No TV or radio in most areas. Did not have satellite until a couple of years ago and have not been there since we got it so unsure about that.

RE: RV from Forrest City IA. to Anchorage

We got the invitation a couple of weeks ago. I believe it says 11 days and 3900 miles allowed. We really don't like the hassle of the airport and are considering towing up and then tenting and taking our time coming back.
Couple of questions >
What about the cookware, linens etc that one usually gets in a rental? They furnish or do you buy your own?
Are you allowed to tow with the rental rig?

RE: Black Hills, Need Reservations for July?

CSP was running nearly full last year from June until school started. Probably from the addition of numerous camping cabins and electricity in most of the campgrounds. Usually a site could be located someplace in the park with some help among the CG hosts. Two or three nights succession could also be acomplished, but not necessarily in the same site or CG. Each CG keeps what we referred to as a 'hole site' that is not rented until after 7 PM. This is to insure that booking errors don't leave a guest without a place to stay.
There are also numerous other CGs on the road between the park and Custer (city) that also have a site or two for 'emergency' no-reservation walk-ins.
So it is indeed best to have reservations, but if scheduling or an emergency prevents that, don't fail to visit just because you have none.

RE: Myrtle Beach Restaurants

The buffets we have tried in Myrtle were not that good. Mostly overcooked and dried out from the hot lights on them. I am sure there are some that do well, but we have not found them yet. Murrells Inlet as several good non-buffet places. Nances is our favorite, but sometimes you have to wait a few minutes.
Great oysters in season.

"I second the route from Gardiner to Bozeman and then East. The road from Gardiner is a very easy road to travel. I don't think we even shifted out of OD on the way up."
I believe believe the OP wanted to go from West Yellowstone. Although that route looks doable as well.

RE: Enjoy life to the fullest

Man, that is such a sad story. The 'front end of retirement' is an excellent observation. I was in such a position to get out with a partial (had to take a penalty) pension from the local government and the state at 55. Have not looked back.
We had people who tried to stay on and 'make my pension' as big as I can and then die six months after retirement. :( Thank goodness for semi-decent health right now.

RE: Greatest Generation

I haven't read the book(s), but I agree that my dad's generation was much better than mine. I watched film the of the other night of the Normandy invasion and these were indeed the bravest men I have ever seen. The front of the landing craft would open and they were facing machine gun fire with no cover. These guys did not hesitate, but advanced up the beach and the cliffs. My dad used to talk about the 'real' army and how the troups were more afraid of the sergeants than the enemy. Thank God for this generation.
