RE: 2009 Chev Silverado 2500HD Duramax

The late 07's were subject to the new emmision standards and came with the DPF, just like the 09 you are looking at. The Durmax, mated with the Allison 6 speed, uses a 3.73 rear-end, so you mileage will be a lot better than what you have now, plus a lot more power.

I think you opened up a can of worms here when you starting out by stating, "the salesman said." There are a lot of good ones out there but you have to keep in mind they make a living by selling you something. Some one once told me the only statment made by a saleman you could belive was, "give me the money."
With regard to the attic vents, they are a selling feature, like the color of your truck or white-wall tires (if you remember what thoes are). We have attic vents on our fiver, but that's not why we purched this trailer. We have noticed, based on side by side camping with friends who don't have them that they do help, but do not completly eliminatre the problem.

Based on your querstion, what you are looking for is a "pin box" for the trailer. Go to Tweetys.com They have most of the popular brands at discounted prices with usually no shipping or sales tax charges. Write down the makes you may be interested in and check out their websites for video's on how they work and compare with each other. Some pin boxes cater to softening up and down motion while others are geared to fore and aft motion. Some attempt to do both, but are more pricey. Good Luck.

RE: 5th airborne sidewinder airbag or without?

I recently installed a FIFTH AIRBOURNE pin box which is the back half (air bag end)of the SIDEWINDER. It has made a great difference in softening the ride. Don't know how I got along without it before.

RE: Short bed vs. long bed

When we lived in the Miami area we had a short bed - extended cab truck because of traffic and parking concerns. After we moved to Tennessee, we purchased our crew cab - long bed for more room, better towing, better ride. If traffic and parking are not an issue to you, I would recommend the lond bed for the aforementioned reasons.

First make sure your truck and trailer are fully loaded for camping. This includes a full tank of fuel in the truck. When you arrive at the scales you will notice there are three scale platforms. Weigh your truck without the trailer first with the front wheels on the front platform and the rear wheels on the second platform. Push the intercom button and they will ask you if this is 1st or 2nd weight. Tell them 1st. After they give you the OK, go inside and pay your $9. They will give you a weight ticket, listing your front and rear axel weights and your gross weight. Then go hook up your trailer and pull back onto the scales, same as before, only this time make sure your trailer wheels are on the third platform. Push the intercom again and they will again ask you, first or second weight. Tell them second and they will weigh the entire rig. Go back inside and pay one more dollar and they will give you your second weight ticket with weight of all three axels and gross weight of the entire rig. Subtract your rear axel weight from the first weight ticket from the second rear axel weight and the difference is your pin weight.

Take it somewhere with a frame lift and rotate the tires. If the noise moves from the rear to the front, its a triire noise. Since you just had your rear axel worked on, I would suspect there may be a problem there or possible the universal. When the truck is on the frame lift run it with the rear wheels off the ground and check for noise.

Nice Truck - Nice fiver. Don't be to concerned about the length of the trailer because your overall length under tow won't be much, if any, longer that your TT rig was when hitched. It will corner and back differently. You will however be over weight. Best of luck.

One valve with a "T" is OK, but I would go with the two. There may come a time when you may require (because of how you are loaded :h) different air pressure on seperate sides. That's how ours is set up.

Pull the wheels and check the brake pads. If you have less than 1/8 inch of surface, get them replaced immediately. At 82K miles, you may want to have the entire brake system checked, including replacing all the brake fluid, you will be suprised at how dirty it will be. If you can't pull the wheels, take the truck somewhere you trust and have them check for you. Don't be afraid to ask them to allow you to visually inspect the system yourself before they preform any work. After all, it's your vehicle and your money. Another option is to have the tires rotated (always a good practice) and look at the brakes at that time. New brakes are cheap insurance, especially when towing.

Before you spend any money for your trailer, check your gross rear axel weight specs, as posted on the frame of your truck. Then go weigh the truck, with a full load of fuel and what ever you plan to carry when towing. This will give you several things; actual front & rear axel weights and gross weight of the truck, without tow. Now add your anticipated pin weight to the actual rear axel weight, if it is below the rated rear axel gross, you are in the ball park. I know that without the fully loaded trailer hooked up to the truck, you may still face an issue with the GVWR and or the GCWR, but at least you are looking at the situation from a more informed point of view and without already having laid out the big bucks for the trailer. Like someone above already said, "weigh - weigh - weigh." The cost of the first weight should only be about $9. and the re-weigh is only $1.00.

I noted you stated, My truck will tow these trailers leagally, so I assume you have already crunched the numbers. If you haven't re-check them before you buy. I towed a 30' Cougar with an F-250 and an even heaver horse trailer for several years with no issues. As long as you keep your trailer weight at or below 10K, you should have no problems. Just make sure your tires are "E" rated.
