RE: Known overweight failures

I wouldn't even count the one instance. The 454 was many moons ago, and wasn't latched up to the Allison transmission. IIRC, it was even before the HD trucks were introduced. Like comparing apples to oranges with the newer trucks.

RE: Weight recommendation for 3/4-ton?

I considered the 3500 when we bought another Duramax recently. But, we keep one vehicle, and it has to suit other needs besides towing. When I looked at those huge rear fenders, and thought about where I was having to park (parking garage in Houston), I walked over to the 2500HD and told them to get me the keys to it. I have the same everything that the 3500HD SRW has except the extra springs, and the long bed. Crew cab with long bed; that ain't for me. If we get a fiver with more pin weight, I'll beef up the rear suspension to handle it. Now fire away!

RE: Superglide 2700

Have you looked at the sidewinder pin box? I installed one and it works great. Merely my opinion, but I don't like the extra length of the sidewinder. Just from my experience as a power plant mechanic, if I had a bolt frozen up, and wanted to twist it off to remove it, I added a cheater pipe to increase the leverage. Looks like the same concept to me. That being said, Tweetys has the 2700 for $813, free shipping, with the capture plate for $104. IIRC that is about the same price as the sidewinder.

RE: RV Trailer 6000 lb axles

Had the 6K pound axles with Mission ST bombs; now happily re-shoed with Cooper LTs.

RE: DIY (sort-of) Lippert Frame project

I'm certainly not a welder, merely a dobber, but I have a question about gussets. I've had to build some lifting devices, and such, and was told by engineering to never fill the corner in with a gusset. They said it will increase the chance of the gusset failing. What's y'alls take on this?

RE: 3/4 ton truck and mobile suites?

NCHauler, I agree with you on the weight of the Mobile Suite, just disagree on the airbags. And, I must say, your posts on weight have a common sense approach. As to the disclaimer on Firestone air bags, I've bought many things with disclaimers (some I shouldn't have), that were made for a purpose, but came with a disclaimer. One of the big ones I recall is; "this item is for educational purposes only". The disclaimers are there to avoid liability. Here is one from Hellwig Products for helper springs: Never load your truck beyond the manufacturer's maximum gross vehicle weight rating. Now, we both know if I have a 2500HD with a pin weight capacity of 2500lbs (GM specs) and I can put those springs on and load it to 3000lbs and it still set level, I'm gonna have a tendency to do so. If they don't have the disclaimer on there, and ol' Johnny Consumer does that, and goes off the cliff because he is overloaded, there will be ten Chicago lawyers on the case before he is cold. Disclaimer: I am not advising anyone to load their truck beyond the manufacturer's maximum GVWR. :B

RE: 5th wheel hitch - 16K or 18K

I finally got a message from Rv dealer. I was told 18K would be the one I need because more durable and price is only 25 dollars more for 18K. So I will go with 18K for our safety reason. We live in PA and will drive thru moutains. Thanks for your advise. Only 25 bucks would probably change my position on just getting the 16K. I haven't even priced them. Ours came with the rig.

RE: 3/4 ton truck and mobile suites?

I'll also repeat that airbags DO NOT work the same as an extra leaf spring works. I was quick to point it out because it is FACT. Read the disclimers on any air bag information and they'll tell you that they DO NOT increase GVWR or RAWR....they level the load...that's all. You post a lot of excellent info. I just happen to disagree with this. Please explain the difference in leaf springs and airbags as to how one can increase GVWR and one can't. I won't argue the RAWR issue. I've seen vehicles that actually use air bags in the place of springs. I believe the disclaimer is on the air bag info merely to limit liability issues in event someone uses them for extra weight, and ends up in an accident. I'm waiting....

Superglide 2700

I've been considering the Pullrite Superglide hitch. Have considered a couple used ones, but they had the hardware for Ford Superduty trucks. By the time I bought the hitch, and new mounting hardware, I would have over a grand in the hitch. I emailed Pullrite, and they are building a 2700 Superglide that will attach to the industry standard rails (I have a Reese slider). This is a 15K pound hitch, and will handle any thing I plan to tow with the 2500HD. CS at Pullrite said they were backordered (30 days out), but I have found new ones online for less than $900. I think that is the way I will go. Opinions?

RE: 5th wheel hitch - 16K or 18K

Why an 18K lb hitch in a 3/4 ton truck? Doesn't make sense to me. I don't think you'll "stress" a 16K pound hitch with less than 16K pounds. In fact, the hitches are probably rated at least 20% under their actual capacity.

RE: 3/4 ton truck and mobile suites?

Just a reminder that airbags don't increase one's GVWR or RAWR, they, quite basically, only "level the load". They take the "squat" out of the back of the truck. Everybody is quick to point this out. If a truck squats to the point it needs air bags won't the weight police swear it's overloaded? I've noticed that also. It doesn't change the sticker on the door post, but air bags do the same thing springs do; transfer the load to the axle. I suppose if I ever want to bring the 2500HD up to the load rating of the 3500HD SRW, I might use the air bags. I didn't notice the "do not remove under penalty of law" on the door post tag.

RE: 2010 Montana 5th wheel

Other than assembly of others parts, what exactly does Montana make? They made a mess in ours; sawdust every nook and cranny!:B

RE: Shake-down Trip with Mountaineer - Some Questions

Our Mountaineer is a 2006, so yours may be different. Thermostat hi/lo is for AC. May freeze up on low, due to lack of air flow. Hmmm, our fridge has the panel up top to select auto, ac, or gas. No problem with cold air from the heater duct, but of course, maybe I just haven't noticed it due to the cold air that comes from everywhere else.:) And, I would agree, they hide that little water heater switch pretty well. Enjoy San Antonio.

RE: 3/4 ton truck and mobile suites?

I love the posts that says the transmission and engine will be stressed and you need a 1 ton...LMAO Ain't that the truth. Gonna stress the same Duramax and Alli that are in the 3500,and GM MDT. Stress the same 11.5" Eaton 3.73:1 gears that are in the 3500. I agree that the Mobile Suites is way too much RV for the 2500HD, strictly due to pin weight. If not, I would be pulling that, or a Select Suites. Salesmen are taught at the "great salesman school" that any truck can pull any RV. And I'm far from being a "weight cop"!

RE: Automatic propane tank switching question

Not much to add, but just open the tank first that the lever is pointing towards. That will insure that you are indicating on the tank that you are emptying.

RE: Does anyone know what kind obf BBQ this is?

Bought one just like it from Lowe's on clearance for $5. Too small, so I put it by the trash dumpster for someone else to enjoy.

RE: 2001 CHEVY CREWCAB 4X4 SHORTBOX HITCH PLACEMENT

If you happen to have a Reese hitch, they have a PDF of measurements for your truck. I just printed the PDF for our new Chevy a couple days ago.

RE: 2010 BIG SKY TIRE WARNING

IN the case of the failing Carlisles, Keystone was correct. The warranty should be handled by the tire maker as they were on my Alfa when they failed. Carlisle stepped up and replaced all 5 of their tires with tires of MY choice ( Bridgestones ) and also paid for any repairs needed. No questions asked. Just return the tires, good and bad. THEY paid for the UPS pickup too. Frank Keystone later recalled numerous rigs to replace the faulty valve stems. In fact, after much discussion, they agreed to pay for changing mine; I'm still waiting for payment though. Really, I don't think Keystone is better or worse than any of the other manufacturers. I've seen a lot brands here on the coast, and they are all about the same; not very well constructed. We were just talking about Keystone service here, and I have experienced it first hand. I don't consider the Mountaineer junk, I have and am still resolving issues as I find them. And don't get me wrong, I'm glad they step up to the plate with some customers. I just don't understand why some and then others can't seem to get anything done.

RE: 2010 BIG SKY TIRE WARNING

Maybe you need to join the Montana owners club. Seems anyone on there NEVER gets denied warranty service from Keystone.:h Ha! That sure is not the case. Not for me at least. Of course, I don't make the big rally up near the factory either. When I had an issue with the valve stems, Keystone promptly told me the tires and wheels were covered by the vendor that they purchased them from (Tireco in my case). I belong to the MOC, but I have never got any satisfaction from Keystone. It is comical to me how folks will pay $40-50,000 for a RV, and feel that they owe the manufacturer allegiance. I've seen folks that try to blame everything on the vendors that supply Keystone. Who in the heck do they think took the low bid on that crap; duh, it was Keystone. They will tell you they never had an issue, but then tell you they had to replace the AC, stove, refrigerator, water heater, and Lord knows what else. Oh, but that is not Keystone's fault! There is one on here that almost lost the fiver to fire from electrical, but I can assure you he will tell you how Keystone stepped up to the plate. Why the hell didn't they do it right the first time? Sorry, I got a little wound up. I'm sure the one that's not up to any good will straighten me out on the Montana line. Rant over.
