RE: Weight recommendation for 3/4-ton?

The average 30-34' long (actual length) has a pin weight of around 3,000#.
Nonsense.
This sounds like a comment from someone who either does not tow a fiver or has never actually weighed his fiver.
MY 35 footer scales at 13,350 pounds and the pin weight is 3000 pounds. Had the weight slips to prove it.

RE: advice on wireless internet

Depending on where you go consider an air card from Cricket. Not available in FL, but just about everywhere else, And at 40 dollars a month with no contract it might offer you a cheap alternative.
just saw a criket ad. lots of fine print, something about $50 limited band width and time limit on that cost?
bumpy
FYI, My Cricket service is great. I am on line on average 60+ hours and did not use the 5GB of usage allowed before they drop you to dial up speed. It is simple, cheap and works exactly as advertised IMHO. While it might not be ideal for everyone due to it's limited availability in certain areas, it does work and is far cheaper than the big two, plus no contract. Which means you can cancel at anytime!
The only charge is the 50 dollars for the card, and that is free as long as you keep connected for something like 60 days.
NO, Cricket uses an air card just like the others, only less costly. You simply plug the card into an available USB port on any computer you want, It automatically downloads the software package and follow the simple instructions to get online. Unless you do a lot of downloading you will unlikely ever hit the 5GB limit.

RE: Weight recommendation for 3/4-ton?

Quit looking at 3/4 and go right to the 1 ton trucks. The cost difference is minimal, but the extra payload is a lot more. With 3/4 ton truck your net ready to camp cargo carrying capacity can be as low as 1700 pounds and as high as 2700 pounds if you are lucky. But don't count on it. As this is totally dependent on the trucks configuration and engine choices. A typical 1 ton will give you a net cargo carrying capacity increase around 700 pounds.
Don't be fooled by sales people or strangers on the internet. Do the homework yourself.

GM's Official Response to Towing Ratings Part 2

Thank you for contacting the General Motors Customer Assistance Center. This is in connection to your follow-up question as to how engineers come up with GVWR and GCWR numbers for the 2500HD and 3500HD trucks.
According to our research, It is the weight in pounds each axle is capable of supporting. This is done through design criteria, testing, validation that meets GM standards. We hope you find this information helpful.

RE: Road to go in Oregon and California

From SoCal, hot foot it to Weed and get on 97 North. From there depending on what you are interested in, continue north Through Central Oregon and see all there is to offer. Or work your way farther east onto US395 or US95. Once you hit I84 head west. Following that to Portland area. From there get over to the coast on Hwy30 and start your journey south along ocean on US101.

RE: 3/4 ton diesel limits on fifth wheel

You truck can pull a house with no problems. The issue is the pin weight of a fiver. Since a fivers pin is generally 20% of it's GVWR a fiver of 10,000 pounds will load right around 2000 pounds into the bed of the truck directly over the rear axle. With a Ford that generally is heavier that the others your scaled ready to camp weight can be around 8000 pounds. Using simple math add 8000 plus 2000 and you get 10,000 pounds. With a truck with a GVWR of ? you can see that you can easily exceed the truck manufacturers GVWR. IF that does not bother you then go foreword. There is no laws against towing in excess of the trucks GVWR except in BC. Insurance will not be voided. However at the end of the day you may notice a tension that is not there when towing within the manufacturers specs.

Like shoes, everyone has a preference. Because of my bed cover I choose to have the factory tail gate in place. That way I can lock things in the bed when not hitched.

RE: TV Handling

Load it back up exactly as you remember and go to the scales. I suspect that you have too little weight on the rear causing hydroplaning. It explains everything in my mind. Be sure to get weights both front and rear axles of the TV plus the axle weights of the trailer. Then drop the trailer and go back to the scales.
You should see approx equal weight added to both ends of the TV when the trailer is hitched. If this is the case, then changing the number of links will add/subtract the weight shift.
