Why do we cry and why does it hurt so much when someone we love dies? Our lives are only temporary and heaven is eternal - if we could only see the welcoming Charlie is having, would it still be so hard? Remember there was speculation that maybe his previous owner loved him and died - maybe Charlie is reunited with him? Or, maybe Charlie is now pain-free frolicing and happy. Why, oh why, oh why does it hurt so bad? Don't we belive in heaven? If we could just go over to a closed door, open it and see inside heaven - Charlie, happy reunited with others who loved him, we would know then that he is okay. We could close the door and know. But, for some reason God wants us to have faith - we must fall back on our faith now and when the pain comes and we feel the tears well up, we must know that Charlie is in a better place - he's in heaven. Richard, I'm so sorry you are having to go through this again, but please, don't let it stop your good work. Don't let it keep you from finding another place in your heart for another "old fella" who needs you. Surely, God has chosen you for this duty, you have so much love that it can fill up those with empty hearts at the end of their lives. Bless you.

My thoughts and prayers go with you.
Although your time with Charlie was brief,
Of this you can be sure
We all join with you in your grief,
And know your love was pure.
You gave to him a life and home,
On this his final day
And when his time had sadly come
You sent him on his way
Some day at Rainbow Bridge you'll be
And you'll be cheerful yet
When a crowd of happy dogs you'll see
And the greeting you will get
They say that He sends pets to see
Just how we care and love
Now you have one more voice to be
With others there above.
Rest in Peace, Charlie

I remember how excited I was for Charlie to be going to Hunting Island and to be able to walk on the beach with him, to get his reaction to the ocean. He was so excited to see the sights and sounds of the ocean and he was also excited to see the deer walking in the park. I think he thought they were over sized dogs as he wanted to go over and play with them.
Now that the day's events have settled in and I have been able to collect my thoughts I think Charlie was truly a gift from God that He wanted us to share in his last days to see what a wonderful creation he had mastered in one old dog. Truly he was an example of grace and gentleness. He was always watching for an opportunity to show just how much he loved us.
He and Izzie got along great and many a night I watched as Izzie would lay down next to Charlie and groom his coat. I don't think my heart can take another loss for a while so I am going to settle in with Suzie and Peaches. When the time is right I will go find another old dog that someone has given up and give him or her a home. There is a lot of love still left in an old dog....
I want to thank all of the folks on the forum for their heart felt words of comfort. You mean so much to Sue and I, what a great family of friends we have here on the Old Fella thread.

Richard, you certainly cannot be blamed for not wanting to face what you've been through again for a while, and I'd urge you to take your time... though I suspect that when you end up with another one, it won't be when "you" plan to.
In the meantime, if the house seems a little quiet, you might could take in a foster now and then. Something you're NOT going to adopt.

Like Camping shadow, I also knew something was up when I logged in and saw all the messages. My heart breaks for you. Charlie had the coloring of my Maicey so I think that is why he always had a special place. God love you.....

Prayers for your grief, Charlie was certainly a blessing that came into your life when you needed him. No words can comfort you at this time, just know we are all grieving with you and Sue
