My first visit to Mexico land was in April 07. I walked through the border at Mexicalli and was never asked anything, I don't even know if the agent would have looked at me if I did not ask a question. I talked to the two agent that where sitting there and one did not know which paper I needed for the truck or if I needed a tourist card, the other guy told me I did not need anything if i only go to Ensenada, except the car insurance. I guess It is the same has everywhere, you will come across some police or border agent and not everyone know's everything, some are less profesional than othes. Like in your jobs, some are better than others. Like taking picture of governement building, the police probably had a brain fart, there is a lot of tourist in Ensenada, I do not think they run after people that take picture of a building.

The next day, I bought the insurance for my truck, 42 dollars for 6 days, now beeing an experienced traveler in Mexico... I went through the border with the truck camper. There again, no paper was asked, the agent took a look inside the camper, asked if I had any guns, and said have a good trip. I wanted to go on the Nuevo Blvd and the agent removed the plactic drums to let me go across the overpass, he was very nice.

I had my first encounter with the army check point, I do not know what they asked, I said Ensenada, he said ok, no paper asked either.

On the return to USA, I showed the passport, no problem except the USA agent they took a look inside the camper and took my potatoes, could not proof they came from USA, hope he had a good diner...

Turtle-Toad, or anyone, what permits should I get for my truck/camper? If anything? I'm new to Baja so please forgive my ignorance.

You don't need anything for your truck/camper to cross into Baja or Baja Sur. FM-T's aren't required. These are only needed in Mainland Mexico (with the usual exceptions).

But you SHOULD have your registration and/or titles, just in case something happens. If you don't own them, you should have a letter from the title/lien holder authorizing you to take them into Mexico.

You also should always have Mexican Liability insurance, at a minimum. If your U.S. insurance doesn't cover comprehensive in Mexico (and most don't), then get a full coverage policy.

On Edit: I meant to say TIP's not FM-T's. Sorry.

FMTs are required in Baja if you spend more than 72 hrs (?) there or go south of Ensenada. No vehicle import permit is required unless you go to the mainland past the Guaymas area. Permits are secured at Empalme but you must already have your FMT. I am sure there are exceptions but that is our understanding.

We have a new FMT from Vagabundos and wonder about the following:

Where on the mainland, either Nogales or Mexicali, does one have the FMT stamped by the Mexican authority. In the past we did the FMT at KM 21 and the Car permit at Empalme. We use the Mariposa entry point when going across at Nogales and have not crossed at Mexicali so not familiar with that area.
We tow a 28 ft trailer with our pickup.

Sorry, I meant to say TIP's, not FM-T's. (maybe I should read my own sticky ).

And you're correct on the need for FM-T's too.

That's a bunch of nonsense about boat permits. I've wintered every year for the past ten years with my boat in Mazatlan and CSL and have never encountered any such permits. In fact I left a sailboat sitting in Mazatlan for over a year, which I prepaid my dock fees and there was never a problem. The fishing license is only required when you are actually on a fishing charter boat. It's waterway robbery for what they call "fishing". It should be called "killing" instead. You are correct about fishing from the beach not requiring one.

Personal experience does not constitute or change the legal requirements. Just because you haven't run into it doesn't mean the requirement doesn't exist.

A lot the boaters in Bahia Kino found out the hard way about boat permits. In 2005 they were told by the local authorities that they needed boat permits and fishing licenses. Some of the winter residents also discovered that they needed FM-T's (something they had never bothered to get) to get the boat permit and had to go to Hermosillo to do that!

And the fishing license is required if you're fishing from anything that floats and isn't attached to the shore. Just because the charter boats are the only ones that have checked you, doesn't change the law.

I've been salmon fishing in the Pacific NW for over 45 years and (with the exception of the charter boats) have never been asked for my fishing license. That doesn't mean that I don't need one.

When we crossed a few days ago at Lukeville / Sonoita we had all our paperwork in order including copies of everything. They threw a big curve at us by asking for our marriage license! We just laughed and told them we have been married for forty some years and do not carry it with us anymore (actually, I doubt if I could find it!) They conferred in Spanish for some time and then just nodded and let it pass.

It probably will never happen again but be warned...

We find ourselves in a tuff spot as a result of not checking our vin# when receiving the registration back on 5/18/05. Had no problem with
permits when crossing at Nogales Dec O7. Had intended to go on to Lk
Chapalle, because of health reasons we did,nt get there.

Long story short.... we were not able to clear the truck permit. as a result we could be looking at a fine of 400.00. Since returning home
I contacted DMV, My suspicion was right. After returning a truck I bought in April 05, & getting a different Model the next day
the paper work from dealer & Possibly DMV did not get processed.
as a result I received the reg from the truck I returned.
a question returns to bother me?....why didn't this show up when we
were processed at Nogales?
