I've seen the nes like your folks had, they were not too good at speeding up hills.
That one did seem to be pretty nice, I'm not to sure if it's worth $6500 or not.

Yeah they were slow at the best of times, let along on a long grade!
My son knows a guy here in Regina that bought a VDub window van but no camper stuff in it and they paid over 10k. About the same condition as the pic. I gather it was sitting in a barn for over 25 years after the guy died. Had only a few thousand miles on it but still needed some work on the rubber bits.
I still remember when my brother in law borrowed out Austin Mini (850cc) and drove it from Victoria to Saskatoon and it was pretty slow going through the mountains. Still have the Austin though now it has a Cooper S engine that has been bored to 1298cc, long center branch headers, 40dcoe weber carb and a mild cam. a bit over 120hp at the wheels so it goes a bit better then the original engine. My son is talking now about taking our spare front subframe and rigging a 1100cd bike engine to drive it. Seen it done before and boy do they go.

It's a VW "Bus"....
and the more windows, the more sought after, therefore more $$$.
Here is a 23 window....and a 21 window. Notice the missing back corner windows.

Here is a '55 Westfalia and westfalia dormobile

and an ad for the time and a westy with a big tent (tent goes for over $1000)

you can find their crowd here....the samba

I saw this VW camper for sale today. I don't know what year it is and he wants $6500. It's not the original color and the odometer showed 66k miles. It seemed to be in pretty good shape.
Had one of those. Color doesn't matter much, whether or not the sliding door works right, does. Your vintage here is anywhere from '68 to '72. I'm suspicious of only 66,000 miles on that old of a vehicle. Remember, they don't have a digit for 100,000 miles, so it could easily be 166,000 or even 266,000.
Even so, he might be selling it because it may be ready for some serious engine work. The valves are soft in those engines, they don't really like working hard and burning unleaded fuel. Get him to start it for you: if there's the slightest hint of rod knock or valve lisp in it, ask for at least $1500 off for a engine, provided you do the work yourself. Also check closely for body rust.
Keep in mind those busses, pardon me, campers, have drum brakes all around, and if loaded heavily, they have a history of fading pretty bad on long grades. Guess how I know.
Not to throw cold water on your idea, just want you to go in with your eyes open.
Hope this helps.

They're all considered vintage but the sought after are pre '68. Anything with a split window in front, hence a splitty. The '68 and later have one window, called "fat chicks" or "fatties". Some people still love those but most prefer split windows.
take $1500 off...holy smokes a new engine only costs $1500-$2300 depending on if it's turn-key or just the block.
and they're all buses...just some are camper buses and some are window buses...but they're not vans...

I would need to get inside to decide if it only has 66k miles on it or not, a lot of the original interior is in great shape.
I appreciate your input.
I have no interest in buying it just stopped to look and take pictures for this thread.
There are low mileage vehicles out there, my 72 has under 41k on it.

I saw this old Shasta too.
Rubiranch we have lots of old TT's here in ID. I just sold my old 1963 Roadrunner a few years back, big mistake, and wish I still had it. A friend of mine I camp with has an old 1960 Bell that is in great shape. On any given day we can take a drive and find some nice old TTs sitting in yards. I am working on getting some picks of the 1960 Bell and I will try to find the pics of my 63 roadrunner and get them on here for you all.
