Tonya, Linda had an MRI last Saturday and she also has a torn m. meniscus and now wondering what the future holds. Waiting for a visit to her friendly local orthopod.

Sorry to hear about that with Linda. What I know and have found out, a torn meniscus will never heal, it is a cartlidge piece in the knee. The problem is that you can live with the tear and maybe it won't tear worse, but... differnt activities will continue to cause pain in the knee, with sometimes instability. Cortisone injections (which I beleive I am allergic to after the one I had monday) may help some with the inflamation which can degree the pain. It is a temporary fix (if it works at all). The only fix is a scope and repair, which involves non and limited weight bearing for 4-6 weeks.
Tough decision to make sometimes.
Tonya

Larry/Linda,

OK… after sitting on the sidelines for awhile I’ll chime in.

I am having arthroscopic knee surgery on October 28, 2008. I too have a torn meniscus in the left knee. Several times over the past two years where I’ve done something (though I’m not entirely sure what) suddenly a pain like someone twisted my leg off at the knee shot up my leg. I have physically gone down to the ground. The pain has been so severe that I cannot put any weight on my knee to walk. I must hop with support to get to a comfortable and safe place.

Once I get settled and sitting down (with leg elevated) after about 30 minutes to an hour I can put weight on it and hobble around. In about 2 hours, I slowly limp around (like Amos McCoy) with a little pain. I also have a few restless nights of dull pain when trying to sleep. The best medication for my pain is Ibuprofen (or similar) taken when needed (mornings and before bed). As time passes it feels better with each passing day. Eventually the pain is completely gone. I walk and feel fine. Until I do whatever it is that sets it off again and down I go again.

Contacted an orthopedic surgeon.

I did get a steroid (Cortisone) shot into the knee (skinny needle, no pain) from my orthopedic surgeon with the understanding that it could “possible” help the meniscus heal, reduce the frequency of occurrence and pain. After about two months… down I went again just like before. Back I go to the Doctor.

As my surgeon said to me… “There are three options; Do nothing and take Ibuprofen when it does occur again, try another steroid shot, arthroscopic surgery to repair the damaged meniscus.”

I’ll let you know how my surgery went after next month.

Linda, good luck with your doctor and your choices of treatment.

Jim

Oh,My you guys with knee tears, my heart goes out to all of you!! Some of you might not know but I have had two scope surgerys on my left knee, and Dandy Dan can relate to all of the pain also you are having and frustration of getting around. We might need to find somebody who is a PAIN Counselor to (learn to live with pain)and have a pain clinic rally!! Also we need to fine a ortho doctor to join our group so we can have him with us as we need while we get older,he has to be young so he can out last us. If he is new out we already will have anew practice for him to start with. Lee, Do you know of any body? we got already all
kinds of nurses! Love Dee

I think we all just need to work less, and camp more!!!

The spider bite is looking a little better, hopefully it will keep heading that direction.

Good Morning all!

Jim, glad to see you are home!
Jim(JJ),Good luck on 10/28.
Linda, hope you are able to get that tear fixed quickly so you can get back on your feet.
Tonya, we are like the walking wounded, limping, hopping, ibuprofen-taking bunch of RVers out there.

Healing Rally!

I was released from the hospital last evening. I got to sleep for 7 hours with minimal distractions in my own bed. Wow, There's no place like.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Get Well everyone. Pam, glad to hear you are back home and able to sleep. Please keep us posted and we will keep you in the prayers.
All are having a good time at the unofficial rally at Maumee Bay. Special guests showing up were Roger and Cindy, Duane and Annetta, and Linda McCarles. What a joy to see everyone.
