LEC & dnix, thanks for the info.

AZJeepnut, I didn't want to hijack your thread. I hope the questions asked and the answers that followed were also helpful to you.

Well I am looking at 17.5, but increases dollar amount a lot. With the GY G614 I will be almost 3000 pound under their capacity. Looking at all the failures seems more on rigs that were much heavier than mine, also if you look at how many there actually were very few. Just like when Ford was having problems with the 6.0 PSD, so many people jumped on forums sayiny they had problems, yet I had never met someone in person with them. Not saying people aren't havi ng problems, it is just people like to tell of their misfortune, thousands upon thousands of people with no problems will never say anything. Squeeky wheel gets the grease, or attention in this matter I think, I may be wrong and bite the bullet, but I am going to try. I'll report my findings.

I really appreciate all of this discussion, and links provided. So I'll ask a simple question: to avoid clearance issues (don't know if I have any yet as I haven't measured) I can use 16" wheels with a lower profile tire, eh? I really don't want tp flip the axles but a lift of 1 or 2 inches would be fine.

Eric, I would be interested in knowing your tire size because clearance concerns me.

LEC & pritch272, thanks for the excellent info.

Any ballpark cost figures would be appreciated!

Let's see...

Wheels, about $105 each times 4, plus spare and shipping totaled $505;
XPS Ribs, $211 ea * 5 +$45 install pkg, misc disposal, etc and tax totaled about $1200
Raise 5th Wheel about $300
Retro Bar about $20
Credit for return of Milestar tires $360

Net out of pocket: $1665

Take the 5er to a RV dealer and ask them if they will trade your 15in tires/wheels for 16in. That's what I did. They traded all 5 and I paid them about $350. My 16in tires are load rage E's. They mounted them also. The good thing is, I didn't have to try to sell the 15's.

You need to wind up with at least 3" vertical clearance between the tire and the floor and 1" clearance between the tires after you mount your new wheels and tires. Also, you will have to continue to run at least a 16" 75 series LT tire to get the wght. rating needed.

If your springs are currently mounted above the axles, then you can do what Pritch did to raise his trailer or replace the spring pack with one that has 2 more leafs. If the springs are below the axles and you either have the available clearance now or an adjustable Jake Plate you are set. If this is not the case, then you have to either flip the axles or go to longer reinforced spring hangers. BTW, converting to longer spring hangers have their own set of considerations.

Once again, if you go up to the 225/75 X 16 you will only lose a 1/2" of space over what you have now.

If I had any thoughts of getting rid of this trailer within the next couple of years and depending how many miles I planned on towing it I would also consider just putting on a new set Maaxis E rated 15" tires on it and taking my chances. I would not invest the $ in these mods because I don't think you will ever recoup your time/money. However, In my case the 2005 TT is paid for, I have already taken the depreciation hit, its stored inside year round, we like the floor plan and plan on keeping it for the next 5 years or so since it is primarily used for 3 day weekends and vacations. Now, if I did not have to work everyday and could use it for 6 months a year then I am definitely be ready to go off in a different direction.

Good luck on your project

Hello Jeepnut
Just insure that center hole in after market rim is the same diameter
as the OEM. Remenber, the wheels studs are to hold the wheel on, not to carry weight. Good luck and happy camping.

I have been reading posts about larger wheel/tire upgrades and there seems to be 1 simple solution that I have recently learned about on another forum. However, it is one I have not heard mention of before, so I wonder what anyones thoughts might be.
The spring equalizers come in different sizes and heights. The post I read on the other forum said he simply replaced the spring equalizers with larger ones and increased his trailer height 2 inches and for only a total of $18. Sounds simple enough to me. SO wht do you think, guys??? PCM

Hmmm, sounds like a viable option.... where were you when I was looking for options on how best to raise the trailer?
