I have been obsessed with one day owning a travel trailer. I have lurked these pages reading the experiences of the members here. My DH is finally interested in renting a TT for spring break and having a go at it. Many of his objections are based on the ages of our 2 girls, 2 and 6. He feels they may be too young for us/them to fully enjoy a TT.

Help me select a destination that would prove to him all our family stands to gain from one day owning one! He mentioned Flying into Las Vegas, renting a tt then from there the Grand Canyon and perhaps Lake Powell. We are in GA, outside Atlanta, and are willing to consider other options. Last night we wondered if the Grand Canyon was premature for the girls, that they would be more interested in the pool at the CG.

I would like to set us up, as best I can, for a wonderful experience this maiden voyage.
Suggestions much appreciated!

Hello from Dallas Georgia....
We don't have little ones. We do have two dogs. LOL
The Grand Canyon overwhelmed me. I think it would your little ones too.

Let me think of some of our trips and if the children would love them.

Tanner State Park in Carrolton Georgia (My husband believes it's Exit 11 off of I-20) is a great start. We have camped there several times. It has two lakes. One for swimming and you can fish in both. I think they rent out little boats (john boats and canoes). If you have a boat, they only allow electric motors like trolling motors.

The campground is wooded and has a playground.

I'll be thinking of some of our trips to give you more places. We have traveled from Georgia to Maine and back last year and from Georgia to Washington state a few years ago.

We love our travel trailer.

Renting before buying is a great idea. I do think your girls are a bit young for the grand canyon. You will be worried about them getting too close to the edge and they won't fully appreciate the views.

If you are talking about spring break this year...you may not have much luck. Some campgrounds take reservations up to a year ahead of time, especially in the touristy areas. Fort Wilderness in FL would be ideal, I talked about it in my RV.NET blog this week.. But I very much doubt you could get reservations at this point. But it does give you ideas for the future. I've always wanted to go to San Antonio. There are nice campgrounds in the area and I'm sure the weather will be nice that time of year. Keep us posted on your experiences.

Hi. We are almost neighbors. To see if your family is the camping type,I would rent locally. There are plenty of camp grounds within 200 miles of Atlanta to enjoy. From laid back corp. of engineers state parks, to children oriented parks from Panama City Fl. to the Great Smokey mts. Our grand children live very close to Chattanooga Tenn. They have a popup we gave them, and they are only min.s from kid oriented camp grounds. I hope this helps.

I agree with DH. Option: go to the nearest Holiday Inn with a pool and turn the kids loose. When they are old enough to ride bikes think about renting an RV and stay within three hours of home for the first few trips. When they are in Junior High take them to Grand Canyon, etc.

I know there are places that rent motor homes, but I didn't think you could rent a travel trailer

Just about any large campground nowadays has fun activities planned for children of all ages.

For outdoors activities, I would head to the beach this time of year.

The great thing about RV'ing is that you can pack all your supplies before leaving home, so there is no packing/unpacking. Maybe you can sell DH on this when you are lugging all your stuff on/off the plane!

Personal opinion....at ages 2 and 6, the joy of camping is just the camping experience. Take some time to play with the kids, go swimming. For sightseeing, look for campgrounds near age appropriate amusement parks. Some sight seeing of natural wonders such as the Grand Canyon would be great....but the kids will benefit more from doing that when they are older. At this stage, get the kids use to traveling and camping. We started when our boys were 4 and 8. Our older son remembers those early trips, but the younger one doesn't.

If you plan trips with the kids in mind, they'll love camping and traveling. Our days in the PUP took us to Washington, DC, Gettysburg, Pa, South Dakota, and various places in NY and PA as well as Ontario, Canada.

Now, our oldest son is married, and this June, we'll be camping down in the Smokey Mountains with them and the in-laws. We're so lucky that our daugher in-law's parents are great people and fun to be with when camping. Hopefully, in a few years, we'll be camping together with grandchildren along.....what more could you ask for???

We camped the first time and our son was 4. It's the experience in general, setting up camp, toasting marshmellows and pies...jiffy pop.

I would suggest a local campground, perhaps near an amusement park. I would suggest a CG with bike rentals (the kind with a towcart for the little one, a beach, fishing boat rental or pier...my kids love to fish starting age 2, with the little rods.... at the very least a pool.

I agree wait till their older to try Grand Canyon. Even we aren't ready for it and my kids are 10 and 7.

And I would suggest not planning for a whole week. But that's just me. Maybe 4 days....longer than that and the excitement might wear off and they'll just want to be home. I don't know, something to think about.

I agree with all of the above regarding keeping it local. We live in Woodstock and bought our first RV last year. Our kids are 5, 5, and 6 and they enjoy the general camping experience. I have taken them all tent camping since they were about 3. Go to a state park or one of the COE campgrounds. Ours love swimming in the lake, hiking and exploring in the woods, riding their bikes/big wheels around, roasting marshmallows, etc. They really don't need an amusement park. Keep the first trip short. Long weekend would be a good start. We bought the RV so that DW would go with us. She doesn't do the tent camping thing but enjoys getting out in the motorhome.

So some good places to try: FDR state park near Columbus, John Tanner near the Alabama line on I20. Seetwater COE on Lake Allatoona. Lake Conasuaga near Dawsonville (hard to find but a great NFS campground). Lake Winfield Scott. These are a few places we've been and had great times at all.
