I had to tow my new Liberty from the Blue Ox plant in Pender NE yesterday with the battery cable connected because I need to use the 12 volt connection in the Jeep for my wireless brake sender to send the signal to my coach. I experienced no problems what-so-ever with doing this. Just to be on the safe side, I have my Jeep dealer doing research on this with Jeep technical people. I will post any new info here as soon as I receive anything.

I now have about 4,000 miles of towing on our 08 Liberty. I have never disconnected the battery... and have not had any problems.

Not sure if you are still looking for answers, but as a 2008 Jeep liberty owner, I can honestly say that after towing it some 6000 plus miles none of the towed miles are on the odometer. I do not disconnect the battery and have not not had any problems. We hook up with all the safety measures and off we go. It has been a great toad and if not for the camera I would not know it was there.

This gives me a good comfort level with not disconnecting the negative battery cable. Thanks. I spoke to my Jeep dealer today who had done some research with the Jeep tech service people and they told him that with some of their vehicles mostly vans with fancy computer options when the key is turned to the off position with the negative cable connected you could drain the battery in as little as 3 hours. The tech person thought that we would have no such battery drain with our Jeep Liberty toads. That's it; I will leave my battery connected!

Lilcat4646,
There are others on this forum that know more about the 08,s than I do since they have one, but I was in the market for one last Oct and decided to keep my 05 after talking to the people at Jeep. I also had concerns about the part in the manual that says to disconnect the battery so I wrote a letter to Jeep and followed up with numerous phone calls trying to find out why this needed to be done. It's been a year and I still haven't been told the reason this needs to be done BUT I was told that if I had any warranty issues and it was determined I had been towing without disconnecting the battery that my warranty would be VOID. (just something else you may want to think about)

I arrived yesterday at my destination of Wild Horse Casino, OR after driving down one of the longest most curvy downgrades I have driven on in a long time. When I went to start my Jeep Liberty that I was towing, the battery was dead. I know now that the Jeep's own brake lights come when braking on and when going down a steep and long downgrade, they come on a whole lot. I was able to get a quick jump from the coach battries which are in the back where the Jeep was. I left the Jeep running for a while then went geocaching for a while and left it running then too. Hopefully when I leave today with much less braking, I will be able to start the Jeep at day's end.

I setup my Liberty per owners manual!
Installed a battery disconnect switch (thumb screw) which works very well'
Also brake buddy sent me a 12 volt power plug for free which I installed direct from my battery to power my brake buddy.
I don't think you have to disconnect your negative battery cable but I am not taking any chances. It is too risky if something happens and also too expensive to replace the transmission.
I will send any pictures if needed.

We tow a 2006 Liberty, miles don't accumulate but one other suggestion: have a key made without the chip in it then when you stop you don't have to worry about having your vehicle disconnected and perhaps stolen. The key only allows the steering wheel to move, not enough to start the jeep.
