Lana, sure do understand. Still miss Muffy, and Misty. Lost Muffy 10 years ago, and Misty over 20 years. They were great loving pets. Misty was a full blooded cocker and Muffy was half coon and half cocker. How is Charlie doing? he still miss Jessie?

Charlie's doing fine. After a couple of months he started thinking for himself. I was surprised how much he depended on Jessie for everything. It was like don't you know anything. He was kind of dumb founded. Jessy ran the show and Charlie always followed. He's pickup three things from Jessie. When you take a shower it's a must to wait at the door. A cookie or treat has to be eaten in the family room and he also took Jessie's spot next to the slider.

I hear you on the medical bills, it gets awfully pricey awfully fast.
Sofie had one surgery, a Laser Ablation ($1140.00) then started on the injection for the melanoma vaccine $3467.00) in a span of seven weeks.
When she was first diagnosed they said she probably would not live more than eight weeks, but would have a better chance at surviving up to six months or more with these...she lived seven weeks.
Four years ago she had ACL surgery on her hind leg, a little over $3000.00, she was my $10,000.00 Lab, she was worth it, but I hear what your saying.
You never know...enjoy Charlie.

It's been five years (next week) since we lost our first dog. She was 13 years old but it still hurt. Our sympathies go out to eeveryone that has lost one.

Then there's the wienerdogs - can't even give them away!!! Just kidding, we would probably be lost and not active / talking to one another if not for the furkids. Even DD, who's a senior in college secretly likes them.

It sure can get expensive. Jessie bill for Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia (IMHA) which consisted of 3 blood transfusions, hospital stay and medication was around $10,000. In the pass she's had 3 leg surgeries and a simple procedure to remove a small mass from her neck which started the IMHA. Jessie is my $20,000 dog. That's not including ear infections and bladder infections. Poor thing she's gone through a lot.

I am so sorry. It is very difficult to loose pets that play such an integral part of our lives! Dogs are the best part of humanity!

Best wishes!

We know exactly how you feel. Over this last trip in Jan thru March we lost our beloved Newfoundland to a sudden illness while in St. Augustine. It all happened in a matter of 3 days and our boy was only 5-1/2 years old. The rest of the trip was somewhat of a blur and getting in the motorhome (which we bought to travel with our pet) still brings that tight feeling in my chest and tears to my eyes.

Since my wife and I could not have kids our pets have always filled the need to take care of and get unconditional love. It really helped me when I did a video tribute of his life and posted it on youtube. We got many emails and letters from other travelers who remembered him in various spots that we traveled. You can watch the short video by going to:

Youtube.com

in the search bar type in the words Sambuca Bear and the video will come up. I get a bit choked up each time I watch but it does remind me of the wonderful memories I had with my friend.

It is natural and normal to go through a grieving process when a pet dies... we spend more time with our pets, really, than we do with a lot of our family. And yes it takes a while, and it can crop up at odd moments when something reminds you.

That said, if you feel like you are "stuck" in the process, not getting any better as time goes by, or experiencing symptoms of depression, then it may be helpful to seek out grief counseling. There are counselors around that specialize in pet loss, but probably a regular grief counseling type would do if that is what is available.

We lost our Yorkie Gizmo over a year ago, he was almost 14yrs old and blind but we loved him very much. I still feel sad thinking about him. THere is a web site called Dogster where I created a web page in his memory. I still cry when I go there. Its not unusual, dogs are our best friends.

Here is Gizmo's web site: http://www.dogster.com/dogs/479610
