Travelling to the Smoky Mountains National Park in July, want to see the area, my question is as follows.
Is it better to use North Carolina or Tennesse as a base to see attractions ? Which town is best to camp in, smaller and peaceful sites best.

Try Townsend, TN. Check rvparkreviews.com for info. I like Cades Cove CG, but there're no hookups.

Tennessee side is best for seeing attractions. NP has two CG's on TN side.. Elkmont and Cades Cove. neither have hook-ups but do allow generators. Cades Cove is beautiful. It is about an hrs drive though from Gatlinburg. Townsend is a smaller town than Gatlinburg.. not much to do there. Are you looking for hook-ups?

I liked Riverhouse Acres campsite on the river in Canton NC. From there we went by car to Helen Georgia for a day, and Cherokee, Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge etc on different days. Probably more, but was only there for 10 days. Nice to just sit by the river to relax also. A small campground is best for me.

Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge areas have more to do than you can get done.

Tennessee has much more than North Carolina. You will never run out of fun things to do.

Townsend is our choice, campgrounds with full hook-ups, river at your door Tubing is great, Pigeon Forge is only 18 miles, Right at the National Park. Cades Cove is next door, you can go to Gatlingburg, and Cherokee. Plenty to do in the summer.

Agree with Townsend. One traffic signal. Several RV Parks there. Gatlinburg/PF is just a touristy mess (IMHO), but some folks like that.

Tennessee side is your best bet.Much more to do w/ Dollywood and Gatlinburg. We stay at Jellystone, half between Gatlinburg and I40. Great Smoky N.P.is super! Pigeon Forge is just too touristy for us.We'll be there July 3,4 then on our way to Myrtle Beach for a week.BTW,Ashville,NC. is a very peaceful place with Biltmore Estate ,decent restaurants and golf and hiking.

With two kids I would recommend Pigeon Forge. It has more RV parks to choose from and more stuff geared toward kids. If you stay on the Carolina side you'll have to travel through the park to get to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Although it is a very beautiful trip well worth at least one trip it is also a very long ride. If going to Dollywood we stay in PF otherwise we prefer Gatlinburg.
