I've read discussions about whether RVers should continue to use the clamps that the manufacturers use to ensure slides remain closed while rigs are transported to dealerships. On Monday I got some first-hand experience with slides.

On a right-turning onramp from Utah 191 to U.S. 70 (on my way to Moab) I heard a "bang!" like a gunshot and my large driver's side slide, well, slid out! My son was following me and shouted into the CB, "MOM! Your slide is out! Your slide is out!"

Well, I was able to pull over and luckily the rig listed to the right on the shoulder, enabling my son to pull the slide back in. He secured it with the manufacturer's clamps (which I still had stowed under the bed!). And when I got to the campground? It deployed nicely!

What experiences have any of you had with slides on the road? It had been balking when I pressed the button to close it, but after I jiggled the electric motor, it would retract just fine. And while the bedroom slide seemed to fit snugly against the rig's body when retracted, the big slide had a small gap at the bottom.

I'm certainly going to have it serviced when my son gets the rig home (he and his new bride are using it until the end of the week), and think I'll continue to keep the slide secured whenever I travel.

There ya go...I use my Jayco slide out braces every time, there are those folks that do not believe in them...but if nothing else, it snugs your seals up to keep dust and water from getting in!

Kinda reminds ya of the scene in the movie RV.

To date I have used the bar. I will say this I forgot to remove it and tried to put out the slide. When the slide didn't deploy, I suddenly realized it was still there and removed it.

My Slide just has one bar to hold it in, it is on the top.
the slide opens about 3/4" at the bottom with or with the bar!?
Any Ideas? Please I sure could some.
I checked ever thing all the bolts are tight, can't seem to find any kind of adjustment. Rig is in my Sig. Also I have no bars for the bedroom slide. It is a different type of drive.
I don't mean to high jack this it just sort of seemed to fit in.

Newmars come with built-in slide locks. When they're in the lock position, those slides aren't going anywhere. Of course, a couple of times I've forgotten to unlock them before I hit the slide out button. Not a good thing!

Mountain Aire's from Newmar (and other Newmar's) come with an automatic locking slide arm, along with an annoying voice that says "the lock arms are unlocking..." each time the slide switch is pressed, which is kind of redundant after one has heard it 100 times.

I guess after reading this thread, I won't begrudge the little voice anymore.

There have two accidents in this state when slides deployed which have resulted in fatalities. We always use locks. Once when we test drove an Endeavor the slides deployed. We did not buy.

Most slide motors have a brake. Bet you busted yours. Major damage possible when you forget too unlock. I don't and won't use them.

One very important thing we are missing here. The locks or bars do prevent sliderooms from sliding out, but they also keep the rooms from banging the sidewalls while traveling. I've never seen a room that was attached anywhere but the bottom. Some you can litterely shake by grabing the top of the room and push/pull it. MHO is to always use your locking arms or bars.....always.....
