my fairly old Garmin GPS 276C was slow in acquiring sats. lately, and the other day couldn't lock on at all. can this be a need for software update or some other "simple" problem

Bumpy, I had the same issue with mine. I updated the software but the problem continued. I ended up sending it back for repairs. Works fine now. Hope yours isn't as bad. Be sure to call tech support, sometimes they can cure certain problems over the phone.
Good luck

First, I would update the resident software to Version 5.20 using Garmin's Install WebUpdater
Garmin's Web Updater
I had a similar problem with my 276C. I first called Tech Support and was on hold forever. I then EMailed them and was given a solution which worked for me.
Follows are the EMail contents
Subject: Acquiring Satellites
Message Body: When connected to either the (Included) portable Antenna or a remote BNC Antenna, my unit is unable to acquire satellite reception. Only "Bar" 51 is illuminated. Both Antennas have a clear view of the sky. Is an RMA in order?
Product: GPSMAP 276C
Type: General unit operation
SoftwareVersion: 5.20
Response;
Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I will be happy to with this. What needs to be done is what is called an Auto Locate. the way that this done is with the unit powered off, press and hold the ZOOM OUT button and while holding that, press and hold the power button until the unit powers on to the I Agree screen where you have to press enter to continue. Let up on the 2 buttons and press the ENTER button and let the unit set by a big picture window or outside for 45 minutes to an hour. That should remedy your issue.
I would give this a try

thanks dever, I will try that quick fix.
went out and started the process. actually while I was holding the two buttons it ended up at the sat. acquisition page and showed a sat. so maybe it is working now after doing that.
thanks a lot.

RMA = Return Material Authorization - it's number they give you that you affix to the outside of your shipping container so that the factory will accept delivery of the package...
