When I back up I look in the side mirrors at my TT and try to even each side of the TT. If 12 inches on one side and 4 on the other, then I try to have equal distance on each side. Glance in the center mirror to see how close then get out once or twice to see how close to the ball. Then back up to approximately that distance. It is very easy for me. In fact I would rather hook up by myself rather than having help. Same for backing into a site.

I've got a set of magnetic poles. 1 on the ball and 1 just behind the receiver. When I knock over the pole on the ball I'm there.

I just back it up until I think I am within a foot, get out and look at it and adjust as needed. Never took more than 5 minutes. Very easy, just don't back up too far, or your tailgate will pay for it! I haven't done that.....yet.

just takes practice --- those little magnet poles work, but I think once you get used to how it looks in your mirrors, you will be doing it without thinking, and getting pretty close.

As it happens, the jack crank is right in the middle where I can see it from the TV, so proximity is the only real issue, so I just get out frequently and look.

The hitchin rods mentioned above work every time. Usually you can get it on the first try. I just watch them in the rear view mirror or through the back window. It will line up pretty close with ease. Get them at Camping World.

I'm so used to doing it alone, that it messes me up for some to help (um, that's backing I'm talking about). It just takes practice. Like others have said, you'll get used to looking at markers on your truck/trailer and know where you are, then it's just a matter of how far back to go. Just take it slow and don't get in a hurry.

Here are a few more ideas...
I saw one RV'er that made a pole and mounted a large convex mirror (the kind you see on school buses) on the top of it. He would slide the pole between the propane tanks and the A-frame at the tounge. From the drivers seat, this gave him a perfect view of the tounge and the ball as it approached.

Others have installed the new backup cameras - they've gotten pretty inexpensive and are a breeze to install. Plus this gives them backup assistance anytime they need it.
