I've been reading all of the doom and gloom about SUV sales in the tank.

Well, wanting to buy a tank, you'd think I could get a sweet deal.

Found the one I want on the Internet. Went to the local dealer (He'd have to go 250 miles for it.) to show him my trade (2004 F-150 Lariat, loaded w/ only 32,500 miles).

Said he'd take $32,840 + my truck for a $51,840 3/4-ton Yukon.

With a low-ball trade value of $15,000, that's a whopping $4,000 discount -- 7.7%. I've seen similar F-150s (none with as low mileage as mine) advertised for as much as $21,000. KBB puts fair trade value at a little less than $16K.

What say you all. Am I out of line because I want a specific vehicle? Should I expect a better deal?

I'm going to the next town's dealer and giving them the printout and asking them to go after the vehicle, and I'll give them $30K + my truck. That's 13% off sticker (with a $15K trade.) If they say no, I'll thank them for trying and leave.

The way I look at it, time is on my side, unless there's a mad rush for gas-guzzling tanks.

Next step is Suburban shopping -- hate to start all over again!

You'd be better off just buying it outright and selling your truck yourself.

Exactly, I recommend starting on Carsdirect.com and getting a good price to start at the truck you want to buy.

Oh yeah, just keep the truck and buy a Honda Civic Hybrid. That may be another idea.

Yeah, its a pain, but could be worth it in the end. I'd have to pay 5% on the full price if I did that. So, $750 extra tax (w/out $15K trade).

I'm going to shine it up this weekend and park it out on the main road. See if I get any calls.

Great idea, beat you to it, kind of.

Traded the DW's Landcruiser on a Camry Hybrid when they first came out (late 2006/2007 model). (Didn't need two guzzlers with gas on the rise.) Love it and the 35-40 MPGs. When I remind the DW of all the money we've saved, she says she doesn't miss the LC as much (12 MPG).

The compromise was we'd get an SUV to pull with. It is more practical for the way we use our TV when not towing. So, the search goes on. It is nice to not be in a hurry. We waited for the new Sequoia to come out and decided against. SO, here we are --ready to buy at a time when SUVs should be at their deepest discount.

Oh yeah, thnks for the carsdirect reminder. Forgot about them. I think I'll see what kind of cash prices I can get.

You need to remember that KBB is generally very optimistic in it's numbers. Dealers do not use it at all any more. It is way too far off. Also remember that your F150 is another gas guzzler that the dealer will not be able to sell, so for him it is a wash.

Don, you are very right. KBB is pretty much worthless. Blue is out, you need the little "black" book the dealer uses. It gives the auction price of the vehicle, that is, the price the dealer would pay for the truck if he bought it at the auction, usually thousands less than what Edmunds or KBB states. If you have a CarMax nearby, take the truck to them and ask for an appraisal. It will cost you nothing and give you an idea what your truck is truely worth in these high fuel price times. Hopefully you do not owe on it.

I can't get within $2500 of the legit trade value on my SuperDuty. It appears they are low balling all large vehicles. I wanted to get in on the $4500 rebate offered by Ford, may not work out this time.

A truck will have more resale value than a SUV because of the work use in hauling loads, etc. SUVs have traditionally been high priced grocery getters and will bring much less in resale. My Excursion is paid for and there is no way I could come out ahead if I sold it and bought a more economical vehicle having to finance it. I would never recoup the difference.

..If you don't want the hassle of selling the F150 yourself, here's what I'd do:

Get all the details you can on that Yukon, then determine about what the INVOICE price would be on it. Get printouts showing such (there are various places online to get pricing info on vehicles).

Then, find another dealer or two to work with, on that 3/4 ton Yukon (or possibly even the dealer that has that Yukon). Walk in, do NOT tell them you have ANY kind of tradein. If they ask, say you dont know if you want to let go of the F150 or not.

Tell them you want that Yukon, and ask them what kind of deal they can do on it (reminding them its a gas guzzler, and not very popular right now). Tell them, 'negotiating' starts around the INVOICE price, NOT the MSRP. And, BTW: Any price agreement you come to, does NOT include any rebates from GM, *you* keep those if there are any. All things considered, I would not give much more than invoice (MINUS manuf. rebates).

Once you have agreed to a price, *THEN* ask what they'd give in trade for the F150. And, be 'armed' with several printouts from KBB online, NADA, etc. showing roughly what trade-in value for your F150 should be. If they won't give you enough for it to make you happy...sell it yourself.

Thats the approach I generally take. Remember one thing as well: A 'good' deal here, is not necessarily what someone else claims they got on the internet, or what people *tell* you is or is not a good deal. A good deal, is one that you and the selling party can agree on, that YOU are happy with. Don't let a bunch of folks on the internet that you don't know from Adam, who *claim* to have got a 50,000 truck for $20000, make you think you're not getting a good deal.
