We are planning a trip to Carlsbad in July. I need to make reservations for 7 nights, but I am having trouble deciding which campground to use. Has anyone stayed there lately and do you have any recommendations on what park to stay at. I have looked at RVparkreviews.com, but I am confused with one park getting high marks with one camper and low marks with another. This will be our first long extended stay trip with the RV.

Hope you plan on spending time in the caverns. Carlsbad is already seeing triple digit temps.

We really liked the Carlsbad KOA. Sites are a good size and level. The folk there are very nice.

Another vote for the Carlsbad KOA. A very nice KOA. Stayed there 2 nights in May 2005. The CG at Brantly Lakes state park also gets good reviews.

When we drove by the CG at the entrance to Carslbad NP it looked like a dump. We were glad we weren't staying there.

I agree with all of the above. We stayed at Carlsbad KOA last summer. It's about 10-11 miles north of town, but it is well worth the drive. That's some beautiful country. they have a very interesting collection of pictures and writings about Billy the Kid and other settlers in the area. You'll love the camp bunnies!

I was really glad we didn't stay closer to the cavern, which are about 18 miles west of town. I didn't see any campground in that direction that I would have stayed overnight, let alone several days. Take snacks with you so you can remain at the caverns until dusk and watch the bats fly out. That's a sight worth seeing. It will be dark when you leave and there's not many places to stop, except 7-11 type places. they kinda roll up the sidewalks at 8, I think.

Be sure you visit Living Desert SP too. And they have a cool drive-in there--the Fiesta, I think. DH took our DD15 to her very first drive-in movie last summer, Superman 3. She thought that was the bees knees.

Carlsbad KOA gets my vote. Be sure you have gas before you go into the caverns. Gas is really expensive in White City--the jumping off point for entrance to the park.

Vote for KOA also, we stayed there 3 nights in 2006 and also took a day trip to McKitrick Canyon for a hike. (Guadalupe Mountains National Park)( is your search.

Also recommend hanging around for the bats, we did one of the extra ranger tours and had fun

I checked the weather channel and I see what your saying. I started to plan alternatives to hiking just incase is is too hot. I am looking at driving tours through the Lincoln National Forest and finding the vistas for viewing and also Sitting Bull Falls and cave.

Another vote for the KOA. Large, level, sites. Out of town but worth the drive.

We didn't know better and were just doing an overnite stop to visit the caverns on a last minute route change.
We did stay in White City at the RV Park right outside the entrance.
I would not recommend it to my worst enemy.
I would stay where everybody else is recommending.
