I'm looking at getting a Garmin 760. When does the new version of City Navigator maps come out? I don't want to make a purchase now and have the newest map version come out next month. How does the upgrade with Garmin work? I can't find much about this on their website. I see they say you have 30 days from the time of registration to update but if the new maps come out 31 days after you purchase you are out of luck. I'm confused by it all.

Your best bet would be to ask Garmin directly and not rely on opinions that you would get from the forum.

The new maps are out and you should either get one with the new maps or have the new ones installed at no cost. Personally I only update about every other year, but I can see your point about wanting the latest iteration on a new purchase.

I have a Nuvi 750 and love it. I think you'll also be very happy with your Garmin.

Just a quick update: I got curious about my own ability to update my map and just checked with Garmin.

I bought my Nuvi 750 on March 20 and Garmin says I am eligible for the City Navigator® North America NT 2009 Map Update. I'm downloading the file right now. Be advised it is over 2 gig so it would take a while on dial-up.

I received my new Nuvi 760 last week. I registered it with Garmin and was told it was eligible for the free 2009 map upgrade. Did it and everything is fine. I have cable service and the download took about 20-30 minutes.

I was very surprised that mine was eligible for a map update, happy but surprised. Customer service like this will keep me as a Garmin customer for a long time. My 750 is having the new map installed even as I type.

My download took about 40 min.

I spoke with Garmin yesterday regarding the 2009 Map upgrade. The new Map Source program was released May 1, 2008. If you purchased a new unit that was shipped with the old program your are eligible for the new map program. Unfortunately I do not qualify. Garmin also told me they give a 30 day grace period on the upgrade if the customer asks.

Thanks for the response.
I just ordered from Costco. They have the 760 for $350 plus free shipping, add 5% if you are not a member. This will be my 3rd Garmin product, I'm sure I will be happy with it.

Costco has the 2009 map upgrade CD on sale right now for 54.99.

Garmin is a good company to do business with. I purchased a Nuvi 750 refurb which was DOA. Instead of going back to the vendor, I called Garmin and they shipped me a NEW unit at no cost. Regarding the map update, you can download it, or for $10, they will send it to you on a DVD.
