I only go thru one 30lbs tank of propane a season; there's not much savings in using cold water !!

I always kept a little spray bottle like you can get in the cosmetics department filled with water and about 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap. We never let the dishes sit and dry with food on them. Just a squirt and a quick brush over and a shoot of regular tap water. Dr. Gott in the newspaper said in one of his articles that you don't need to wash dishes in hot water. Now if you love those greasy, unhealthy foods or love to let your dishes sit dirty....

I wanted to wash in cold water because my boyfriend and I simply don't use enough dishes to heat the water up everyday but I get tired of seeing them sitting in the sink for days until I have enough to have a reason to turn the heater on.

How about one of those solar shower bags. I've never had or used one, but it seems like if you hang that black bag in the sun, it might get the water warm enough to help with the dishes.
BTW - Has anybody ever tried using one of those? (probably a better question to post in the tent camping section).

From the science point of view....you would have to get the water super hot to kill all the bugs. Think about...what temp do you have to heat your meat up to in order to kill everything? 160...at least...do you wash dishes with water this hot? If not then cold water is doing just as good a job.
Oh and I have used the solar shower bags before and they really do work.

I had one of the hot rods in my previous unit. just plug it in a while before you want hot water and you are using the campgrounds money, not your own propane.

Oh and I have used the solar shower bags before and they really do work. In girl scouts we would wash our dishes, then we'd put them into a net bag and dip them into a pot of boiling water to sanitize them.
Nowadays I like to fill my teakettle and let it heat up while I do my dishes. When the dishes are done and the water is boiling, I set the dish drainer full of dishes in the sink -- then I make myself a cup of peppermint tea. While my cup of tea is brewing, I pour the rest of the boiling water over my dishes. Then I sit down and enjoy my tea while the dishes air dry.
I think you could get away with washing your dishes in cold water, but I'd DEFINITELY want to sanitize them afterwards. Go ahead and use a little propane in the name of health...

That's ok for some, but in our case, we simply don't want to overuse energy, no matter who is paying the bill.
