I never pick up my change. I either give it up as a tip when I buy coffee. or throw it in a basket for needy people. or more often than not ....throw it away in the street, someone will pick it up. Then its there problem.

Are pennies still actually made out of copper???
I believe that today pennies ares just copper plated. Prior to 1983 they were copper.
One of the local television stations ran an article a few weeks ago about copper theft. They said it's illegal to take pennies to a recycling facility. They did say the actual copper in the penny is worth more than the penny. I believe the penny is still solid copper. Nickles, Dimes and Quarters are now made of 2 metals. How do I know? I still enjoy putting pennies on a rail road track and watch em get squished! When they are paper thin, there's nothing but copper there!

In our town, they are collecting pennies for "Pennies For The Park" and will use them in trying to break the world record in I think July with 40 miles of pennies. So pennies might just become scarce here for awhile. So, start a fundraiser! I wonder what happens when they take them to the bank to try to deposit them?

Pennies havee not been solid copper for years. I think around 1980?
The ones that have the wheat leaves are solid.

This is what the US Mint has to say about the composition of our coinage
We collect/save all our change throughout the year. I have to be PC here, so during December we separate the coins. Nickels and pennies get put in the Salvation Army kettle. Dimes, quarters and the occasional dollar go to the bank. I do not carry coins in my pockets.

I have two jars, one for quarters, one for all other coins. Everytime I leave the house I grab a hand full of all others and out the door we go. My goal is when I come home to either only have quarters or no coins at all when I return. This keeps the "what do I do with...." problems non existent or adds quarters to the other jar, because you always need quarters when on the road. You could always use them at the post office next time you buy stamps or mail a package, we are always glad to get the change, keeps us from making so many trips to the bank to get change, which most of the banks don't want to give us. We get the poor people living off of SS coming in with a ziplock of coins asking if we will take it so they can buy a book of stamps, so we have them dump it out and we start by counting pennies first, then nickels, then dimes, then the quarters (if there are any) this way if there is change left over, they have the bigger coins. Makes everyone happy.

All of our change goes in an old 5 gallon water bottle and when it gets about half full we pack it off to the local pregnancy center where my wife volunteers.

My bank will take them, but I have to leave them loose so they can run them through the counter.
You will have to take them to your bank.
