We are in the final planning steps for a trip to the Lake Tahoe area of California from Philadelphia, PA. We are going to the Rubicon Trail and then onto the Dusy- Ershim Trail in the Dinkey Lakes Wilderness area for a Jeep Event. We will be carrying our Lance 835 Truck Camper on Our Dodge Dually and towing our Jeep on a Car Hauler.

Our planning shows the most direct route using Route I-80 across the country, I received travel planners from all of the State Tourism departments for the states that we will be passing through. We will return using Routes I-40 and I- 70

Although we will be focused on getting to our initial destination (Lake Tahoe), I would be most applicative if you would offer “must see’s” and routes or areas to avoid (Traffic delays, etc) for this journey.

We have been to California before by air but have never been farther west than Ohio by Land.

We can’t wait and look forward to your thoughts and suggestions.

If you have the time, don't just rush across Nebraska on I-80. There are a lot of pioneer museums, living history villages, etc. in central Nebraska that are worth visiting. Spend a day or two somewhere around Grand Island, Kearney, North Platte, etc. if you can. And while you're driving across Nebraska, pay attention to the (very) gradual change in flora & fauna and the land use over those 465 (!) miles. (And you thought PA was long!!) It will change from eastern vegetation and cornfields to sagebrush, by stages, over the distance. Took me 5 times across Nebraska to notice this. I think it's cool.

When are you leaving? If it's very soon, be aware that there are some detours along I-80 in eastern Iowa due to flooding, so allow extra time for those.

Have you gotten rservations yet? William Kent or Sugar Pine Point State beach are your best bets, but you will want to havethem reserved. Make sure you have breakfast at the Old Fire Sign before heading up the Rubicon.

Don't know how much time you will have but in Aurora Nebraska @ exit 332 go North and they have one of the best museums we have seen in a long time "Plainsman Museum".
Also if you are allowing for extra days, at Green River WY go south to Flaming Gorge. This is very beautiful country.
