Are the GM installed 7-pin connectors on the hitch plug receptacle on the trucks wired the same as the 7-pin plug on my camper? Are all plugs on either autos or campers wired in a standard configuration at the factory? I have a new tow vehicle, a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD, and want to make sure I don't need additional wiring work before I bring the camper home. The camper is factory wired. My camper is a 2006 HTT Fleetwood Pegasus Hybrid. Unfortunately, the camper is stored a distance from me, and I am unable to make the drive to check it out, before I need to tow it home.

There is a standard wiring code followed by most manufactors, can't say if China is using it. But GM should be. Bill

You will need a brake controller hooked up under the dash and the 12volt charge lead to the trailer connected.
Depending on which 2007 you have, the latter will either need a fuse inserting in the underhood fuse-box or a couple of wire terminals connected to power studs on that same box.
The light wiring (park/stop/turn) is prewired; nothing you need to do there.

should that 12V lead be "hot" all the time or only when the engine is running ?

if it is meant to be hot all the time what stops a guy from running down his truck battery when boondocking ?


I just bought a near new 2007 Sierra 2500HD SLT 6.0L.. Im guessing i will have to hook up this mystery wire when I get the truck home ?

My '06 GMC needed only a fuse installed in the under hood fuse box. My dealer did it for free knowing I would be towing a trailer. All wiring on TV's and trailers have been, or were supposed to be, a standard configuration since the '92 model year. I know when I trded the '03 Dodge on the '06 GMC no changes were needed, just plug in and go.

On my Envoy the 12V charge line is hot all the time. I don't know if the trucks have a relay or not. I haven't gotten around to putting a relay in mine yet, I figured I could use the DRL circuit to enable the charge line.
Rumor has it on the '07 trucks GM did away with the plug 'n play connector, the wires are open ended & tied up under the dash. You need to match them by function and not by color to the brake controller.

The old body style should need the fuse in place only. The new body style has the fuse but needs the wire connected to stud 1 for the 12volts to the trailer. If you have a IBC, that should be hooked up already but if not, you might need to hook up the hot side for the brake controller as well, that would go to stud 2.

MudChucker, don't panic.

Just get the trailer brakes hooked up. The charge lead is OPTIONAL. You can go the entire life of the camper without it. All it gives you is the ability to charge the camper's battery while on the road. If you camp where there are hookups most of the time, your onboard charger will take care of charging the batteries.
