A high school student and her father did a study of the accuracy of weather forecasters in the local area. It turns out that if every day you say it is going to be sunny, you will be right nearly the same percentage of times as the "professional" forecasters. I think the numbers were only about 2 percentage points apart. There was an article about it in the KC Star a couple of months ago.

I don't know about your local forecasters, but here in the St. Louis area we are blessed with many fine meteorologists. My favorites are on Fox 2 KTVI. Those folks operate a forum similar to this one, also a chatroom, and they respond to remarks on a regular basis. They aren't afraid to comment on botched forecasts either, and even like to take time to explain to the viewers why a forecast was missed. Usually though, they don't miss. They are very honest and sincere and on the rare occasion when they make a mistake, they admit it and explain why it happened.
Weather forecasting is a tough, demanding job that requires a great deal of knowledge and education to achieve any sort of accuracy. Of course there is a big difference between an honest, intelligent meteorologist, and the other type of "weather forecaster" that possesses a pretty smile without much substance behind it.

I wonder how many are just "weather readers"?
I prefer to be my own WP (Weather Person) NOT (White Phosphorus).
In the AM I check "Wunderground Weather", with it's Radar and Satellite imagery.
I can track a storm right up to the minute it hits. If the weather satellite is down for north of us I use one just south.
I don't have to wait for commercials to finish for them to tell me I am 10 minutes away from 100 mph wind hit.
Sorry TV weather, you lose.

Here in the heart of flyover land, anything that happens is big news, and we have Channel 4. Channel 4 is a channel that thinks that weather events are big news, and while they haven't yet pre-empted a big chunk of my TV screen to warn me of a gentle zephyr coming my way from the south west, anything coming on that exceeds that classification, for example, a breeze sufficient to blow the fluff off dandelions, gets covered ad nauseum.
If it shows up on radar, they do everything except turn on the sirens, and if it has lightning and thunder, you can be sure that it will be right there before you, taking up about a foot of the left margin of the screen. There will be interruptions every few minutes, with people never before seen on camera, standing in the rain, and they will be telling you that they are standing in the rain at the intersection of Blue Mound and Calhoun roads, where it is raining.
The only blessing that I can possibly see in this sort of coverage is that since I have a satellite receiver, when the red and orange part of the storm gets over head, or a little bit south, the idiots will be turned off. I have found myself rooting for the storm, just to end the horror of the coverage.
In terms of uselessness, these guys are right up there with mammaries on boar hogs.

Stressor... Do you have any idea how many years it's been since I have heard that Boar Hogs line (Only grandfather never said "Mammaries") Thank you.. Best laugh I've had today and I've already covered my usual joke sites. (Hard to type when you are laughing don't you know)
I have seen tornados where the news was saying "All Clear" and .. Well, you cited the other side.
However it's not that they are wrong.. It was all clear at the studio,,,
Then there is the Newfoundland weather report
Outside the studio window is a pole with a arm and a chain hanging from the arm, A good solid length of LOG chain.
If the chain is swaying gently.. It is a gently brease
If the chain is parallel to the ground.. That's a "Stiff Breeze"
I left out the in-between to save bandwidth.

There is a scene in the movie "The Weatherman", with Nicholas Cage that sums up weather forecasting. Cage is the weatherman and walks into the back room where all the computers are showing the radar images. He proceeds to ask the expert analyzing the data, what's the forecast, and the expert says, " how should I know, it's wind you can't predict wind.

Weather is very hard to predict in the Rocky Mountain state, because of the mountains. We have shoveled a lot of "partly cloudy" many times!!
