We will be staying at the KOA at Petaluma, CA from July 5-8th. We have decided to drive north on either the 101 or 1 through Northern CA upto Newport, OR and back through Lake Shasta on back home to So. CA.

We will be towing our CR-V. Where do you suggest to stay along the coast? We plan stay at the Outdoor resort in Newport, OR, but wanted to know where to stay in between? We have never been along the coast before, so wanted to get the most out of our trip.

Try Redwoods RV Resort in Crescent City, any Oregon State Park. Punch Oregon Coast in the search engine above and you'll have 6 months worth of reading material and all kinds of suggestions as to where to stay. There are 4 or 5 campgrounds/parks in just about every coastal town. May be problematic at this late date without reservations, however. Try to get to state parks early in the day before RVs are lined up at the check in.

We will be following you up the coast on July 23rd. This is a repeat trip for me from about 30 years ago. We will be staying at Redwood River Resort in CA and then Umpqua Lighthouse State Park in OR. Then onto Portland visiting relatives for a few days before treking back throught Shasta on I-5 coming home.

It was great the first time and I hope so this time too and for you.

As stated earlier, ANY of the Oregon SP. They have the prime locations along the coast and beaches. Thank you Oregon for your foresight!! It really irritates the privately owned campgrounds that the state had the foresight to set aside prime locations on the coast for their parks years ago. Not sure how crowded they are this year. You may want to get online and see about reservations.

Good luck and enjoy the great scenery.

If you can---- reconsider your route and pass thru Shasta first continuing north as far as you have time for on 5 before cutting west to the coast--- you will have a much nicer trip.

Traveling south all the scenic turn-outs will be on the correct side of the road for you to slow down and stop. Going north you will miss most of the scenery.

BTW-- We think the last hundred miles or so southbound before the CA/OR border is some of the most spectacular.

We will be spending the 4th of July weekend in Napa and then a one night stay at Mad River Rapids in Arcada. Heading to Winchester Bay OR for a week then back down to Gold Beach for a week. If your gonna take 101 and want a stop over place Mad River is fine but not a destination place. Benbow RV is very nice and we stay there on the return trip home.

Looks like will pass you going the other way! We leave Sat/Sun of this weekend for ID to see our son in the USAF. Spend 3 days in McCall ID with him then over to Vancouver WA area for the 4th with family friends and our son and his new friend. Then we are scheduled for Crater lake for 2 days but they are still closed due to snow! Over to the coast of CA at Crescent City down to Healdsburg area and then onto Monterey for 2 days including the aquarium.
Our 14 YO that is traveling with us when asked what he wanted for vacation said, "see Scott, big brother, and the Monterey aquarium everything else is fine. he is extra jazzed since the WA step is his favorite "uncle"!

101 in CA will be fine for your rig, however, I would caution you about Hwy1 which is very curvy and tight. It doesn't go all the way to the Oregon border anyway, so staying on 101 and seeing the Redwoods is a better choice. Once you get into Oregon you can't go wrong at any of the State Parks along the coast.

It looks like you have a 40 MH, is that right? So from KOA Pelaluma, I would suggest that you take 101 north and forget about Hwy 1 up the califonia coast/ Motorhomes 40 ft or longer are prohibited on most of Hwy 1 from Bodego bay north to Fort Bragg and then north from there to Leggit where hwy 1 connects back with 101. It is narrow and has sharp curves. Here is a link to the Ca DOT site that shows these restrictions. When in come up, click on number 4 on the map and notice the dotted red routes that prohibit 40 ft Motor homes. And then click on number 1 to see the rest of the map for the north coast. I agree that Benbow RV park is a nice place to stop and explore the redwoods with your CRV. All the state parks in Oregon are nice. But seriously, look at the map and avoid Hwy 1. It is beautiful in a car DOT MAP

As a side note, there is a Safeway Fuel station in Willits, Hwy 101 on the right side at the intersection on Hwy 20. If you have a Safeway card you get a $ 0.03 discount
