I am going to lake tahoe (south) in August and wondering if anyone has a campground recommendation. I am unfamiliar with the route from the Sacramento side. Has anyone taken that route in a 5er?
thanks

We took I-80 out of Sacramento toward Reno last fall and have to say that it was one of the roughest routes that we have taken. While there is some beautiful scenery along the way, the condition of the road is so bad that I was really worried about how our 5er would hold up. Luckily, we did not sustain any damage (that we have found). It really took the enjoyment out of that part of the trip.

I was afraid of that. I have driven from Reno to North shore without a trailer and would not try it with the 5er. It sounds like the south route is the same. Looks like i'm renting a cabin. Thanks for your reply

You can go up Hwy 50 through Placerville to South Shore Lake Tahoe. Hwy 80 is not the way to go to the South Shore. Check it out on a map. After Pollack pines you run into some two lane but with several passing lanes and turnouts. I have not pulled a 5er up hwy 50, but of course you have to climb to get over the pass but with your rig should not be a problem. At the top of the pass you start down into tahoe, a little steep and some curves, just gear down and watch your speed. You should be OK. Not sure on campgrounds in the area, maybe someone else will chime in on that.
Echo summit pass is about 7300 feet. Here is a link to one site about Echo summit Pass. Echo Summitt

I went across 50 and down a couple of years ago(2007). A Great trip. I dont know where this bad road is buy I never found it. South Lake Tahoe KOA is not bad A little away from town, but decent sites unless you want a pull thru nothing real fancy. but fire pit, some sepertion and decent experience. Good Luck

Hwy 50 from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe is no problem it is 4 lanes to about 3 miles pass Bridal Veil Falls then 2 lanes with passing lanes to Strawberry then 4 lanes again to the summit and 2 lanes to South Lake. You will be going up hill most of the time from Placerville to the summit but no real steep grades of any length. We have done it many times with 35 ft.V-10 MH towing a Dodge Dakota. Camp grounds on that side of the lake include Campground By The Lake I think they have a few electric, water sites,D L Bliss state park no hu but on the lake,Emerald Bay state park no HU also on the lake,Tahoe Valley RV Resort FHU store pool etc.,Fallen Leaf Lake forest service no HU but large sites and a nice little beach at Fallen Leaf Lake,Camp Richardson I think they have a few water&electric sites lots of trees pretty crowed and all dirt sites, Nevada Beach at Round Hill Nevada forest service camp no HU large sites walk to beach,Zephyr Cove Resort FHU pricey beach across the Hwy. at the signal. Have fun

We tow our large 5er up Highway 50 at least twice a year. Sometimes more. But we live off Highway 50 so it's the most convenient way to Tahoe for us. It's no problem at all. When you get to the summit it's a bit steep, but nothing too much to handle. We like to stay at Fallen Leaf Lake (no hookups) and sometimes at Tahoe Valley Campground which can be a very busy resort. We have stayed at Camp Richardson but in the summer it's too dusty and busy for us. We really like Fallen Leaf but we reserve a drive-through site which is plenty of room for our rig. We've also towed I80 to Reno, but the pavement is so rough we don't like it at all. Plus, most drivers on I80 are in a very big hurry as well as it being a major truck route.

Just traveled up to Reno on I80 in a passenger car. They're doing lots of construction, re-paving parts of I80. They are working late into the day trying to get it all done before winter. Hopefully, it will smooth out the road and much improved by August.
