I've traveled 88 from Stockton to South Lake Tahoe many times; in fact I'm making that drive again tomorrow. It is a good 2-lane road and not a lot of traffic. When you get to 89, hang a left to 50 then right to South Lake Tahoe. Depending on where you are going, Pioneer Trail will eliminate lots of traffic and will bring you back onto 50 just before Stateline. I stay at Campground by the Lake, a county-run campground.

80 is the worst road in the United States. Ca. being some of the worst parts. Some of the other states maintain the road much better than Ca. Snow removeal equipment, chains and what not for winter travel have got to make it hard to keep up. I will never drive 80 again.

I have driven I-80 between Sacramento and Reno a number of times with my Titanium fifth wheel since April of this year and encountered the extremely bad conditions. After my last trip I contacted CalTrans and they said that the highway is currently being repaired and should be done by the Fourth of July holiday. This is only a temporary repair and they should be doing a permanent repair in the near future. I'm going back up to Reno for the Fourth of July so I hope CalTrans will have everything done by then.

They won't be anywhere near done by the 4th of July. The work being done is going to take a couple of construction seasons to finish. They are completely rebuilding the highway over the Summit along with other projects. Maybe some of the pothole repair might be done, but you will encounter road constuction zones along the way, especially over the summit where both directions of travel are on the East bound side temporarily. It gets a little tight through that portion, but it is doable, just take it slow.

This is the route that we will be traveling tonight. Scenic and a pretty nice drive.

Just returned to Sacramento, CA via Interstate 80 from spending a weekend at the Sparks Marina RV Park. The road is better from the NV state line to Truckee, but there is still quite a bit of rough road east of Truckee.

Echo summit pass is about 7300 feet. Here is a link to one site about Echo summit Pass. Echo Summitt
That is one 'great' link.

East & West bound 80 from Floriston to the Nevada State line will be 1 lane until the end of July for re-paving and bridge repair. Nevada State line to downtown Reno will be off & on 1 lane both directions for re-paving through the late Fall.

50 from Placerville to South Lake Tahoe. Towed it with 14K of 33ft bumper pull ToyHauler behind a long bed crew cab Ford. No issues, much better road conditions than the time I went over Donner on I80.
I've only stayed at the South Tahoe KOA one time, seemed kind of tight for manuevering around.

Can confirm that US-50 is a good way to go, at least with a MH and dinghy. Good road and great scenery.
We have stayed at Zephyr Cove on the Nevada side for two great trips. It is very convenient to South Lake Tahoe area, with little traffic. Great views of lake also.
Only disadvantage coming from west is that you have to go all the way across town to get there initially.
Hard work pays off in the future; laziness pays off now.
