We drive a Class A 35' motorhome no tow. Will be leaving Gold Beach, Oregon going to Yreka then Chico, Ca. Yreka is not a must if the route doesnt go to Yreka,ca.

Would like to know if going back up 101 almost to Coos Bay and take 42 over to Roseburg is best and fastest... seems that going So. 101 to calif then back up 199 to Grants pass seems to be the long way around..

Going So. 101 to Calif McKinleyville/Arcata then 299 to Redding would be slow going and 299 doesnt look too appealing.

Tks for suggestions and experiences....

From Gold Beach the only reasonable route (even though there is a loop South and back North) is South on 101 to 197 which meets 199 then East to 5 --

If you don't need to get across until Sacramento or so the preferred route is 101 South to 20 and across the the 5 at Williams.

299 is passable but a real grind--

I much prefer hwy 299 to hwy 199. Hwy 299 has numerous places to pull over with a big rig. The roadside rest stops are an hour apart, the one east of Arcata is an hour from Arcata. It takes me at least 4 hours to drive from Arcata to Redding with my trailer. I take the road slow, and the curves slow. It's a lot less tiring. I think there are more passing lanes on hwy 299 than 199. It's a minimum 3 hour drive. Oak Bottom Marina at Whiskeytown Lake is a nice place to stop and take a break before driving into Redding. The town of Shasta may also have parking for you along side hwy 299.
Make sure and check road conditions before crossing 199 or 299. If not the fires, then road construction may slow you down.

Only been on 299 once and I swear I will not drive it again unless I am forced to. Take 101 south to Ukiah and jump on 20 East to I5. Other alternative is Crescent City to Grants Pass, but that is a long drive back North to get to I5.
Hwy 20 past Clear Lake is a nice drive and only takes 1-1/2 hours or so from 101 to I5.

Take 101 all the way to Ukiah and CA 20. Oh, and be careful....the whole northern half of California is swathed in smoke from the wildfires!

299 has 1 way controlled traffic becaues of wildfires. I read last night where a fire had jumped the Hwy and the road was closed intermittently. 199 would be my choice anyway, easier drive. Going all the way down to 20 would make you backtrack to get to Chico.

If conditions were better, I'd go 299 over to I-5 (shortest route). The second best choice is 199 to Grants Pass to I-5. Choice two is more miles, but travel time is not that much different.

Go 199 to Grants Pass...only about 2 hours from 101 and 199 to Grants Pass. Plenty of turn-outs if needed and passing lanes.

No road from the coast is a Sunday drive in an RV. Check road conditions for 299 due to fires in NorCal. Hwy 99 from Red Bluff to Chico is shortest from I-5.
