Guess we all have different ways of doing things, I see a jack overcoming the the height of axial, the height to springs, then the additional height of the compression of spring, then to exceed the height of the compression on the tire. will almost surely be quite a balancing act. Plus you most likely be throwing all the weight to the trailer to the opposite side adding additional weight to the two remaining tires on the ground. After you get it up there so your tires are clear, the none gusseted rail you have the jack on decides going to fold under the weight of the combined load. Nope not for me, I'll just roll the trailer up on to a piece of two 2X6" just giving the other wheel enough clearance to remove it. Keep the weight of the trailer on the other three wheels which should be above there rated load range. But you do it as you see fit. Good Luck and happy tire changing. Bill

there is certainly nothing wrong with jacking the axle on a standard suspension trailer. I wouldn't go much farther than a 6-8 inches inside the axle U bolt especially on heavier trailers. I've jack from 2750 lb axles to 8000 lb axles with no problems. Fact I never heard of not jacking from the axle or have I ever heard of axle problems from jacking the axle until I became a RV.net member.

Me too never heard of untill this site, then it saids it in my prodigy install manual, and on the dexter axle website and now see it every where i read.So i did build a 2x6 boards to drive up on and just be as quick as possible. Thanks guys

The Dexter manual says to use the frame.

Of course Dexter says use the frame. They don't even like you to touch thier axles. If they could, they would force you to bring them in for bearing repacking. That's like asking a barber if you need a haircut

My springs are above the axle. I know it may be a dangerious, but I use the spring U bolt to jack the axle up. I've thought about making an adapter for the bottle jack that will cradle the U bolt.

another good cradle is a short piece of channel welded to the jack. Works great for cradling different size axle tube's.

After over 20 years as a shop Foreman and changing hundreds of bent axles ,YOU NEVER JACK ON THE AXLE TUBE !!!!!!ALWAYS ON THE FRAME !!!!The camber is set at the factory . I have never seen a bent spindle . The axlesmost often bend outside of the spring hangers . Most often from hitting a curb or pot holes at high speed . Remember all axle tubes are the same the spindle and bearing sizes determine the axle rating and some are just a different composite of the brake shoes .
