On my Cougar the switch for the propane is inside but the switch
for the electric is outside behind the cover.
Since we always camp in State Parks we use the electric probaly should
use the propane now and then just to make sure it works.

After nearly burning up our old 5R with 30amp service (Plastic box on transfer switch completely melted and was scorching the wall) we never use the electric setting any more.
Even now with our new trailer that has 50amp service, never use the water heater on electric. IMHO, it uses too many amps and you tend to forget that it is on. So, you have on the AC, the coffee pot, then the better half turns on the curling iron and/ or blow dryer... OOOPS, forgot the water heater was on electric.
The propane works so well for hot water, and it only takes a very short time for it to heat the water (even in a 12 gallon tank) that we just flip the switch on the propane a little prior to needing the hot water and we're good to go.
No more worries about overloading the system... especially if your unit is a 30amp. Recall that several years ago, only 50 amp coaches had dual electric/ gas water heaters... maybe there was a reason
My 2 cents...

I also leave the switch on and use the dedicated breaker within the converter box to switch it on and off from the inside.

On our old Dutchmen TT the water heater was located under one of the dinette benches. The electric switch was also located under the bench right next to the water heater. Very inconvenient and easy to forget about when packing up to go home.

Same thing on my just sold travel trailer, plus forgetting to shut off that d#%n second switch cost me a new element not once, but twice when first getting the trailer de-winterized. Yeah, I know -- too soon old und too late schmart!!
