When we were planning our trip to California I asked for information about taking my motorhome along Route 1 north of San Francisco. Those who knew the route must have had a good laugh at my ignorance. We did that in the Jeep a few days ago and I wished the Jeep was a few feet shorter and a foot narrower.

Now I have another route question pertaining to motorhomes. We want to travel from Sacramento to Redwood National Park. The route on my computer program suggests Route 5 to Reading then 299 west to Route 101 and north to the park. Route 101 looks OK.

Route 299 looks like a road with a lot of hairpin turns and slalom-like sections. Is this easily possible in a 37 foot motorhome?

Thanks,

Paul

I have a hard time driving our car on 299. I would never take our RV on that road. Again maybe I'm just chicken, but alive.

I've gone 5 to 20 to 101. It's a easy route with a lot of nice scenery.

If you had a problem with Highway 1 in a Jeep you may not wish to take 299 in a Motorhome. It's easily doable and I would have no problem doing it, but if you didn't like 1 you may not.

A different route is to take I-80 from Sacramento to Highway 12 or to Highway 37. Work your way over to 101 from there and then take 101 North to the Redwoods. Nothing to do with road conditions, but I would probably take that route anyway as it's more scenic. You won't have 200 miles of the nothingness that you would have on I5.

Another vote for I-5 to Hwy 20 to Hwy 101. The suggestion of taking I-5 to Hwy 199 at Grants Pass, Oregon would be a nice drive but has two long steep grades and is quite a bit longer distance to travel. As for 299 out of Redding, CA. ... way to much smoke and it takes you right through some major fire areas.

I want to leave this earth quietly in my sleep like my grandfather and not like the hysterical, screaming passengers riding in granddad's RV just before the big crash.

We were going 299 Sunday, but have decided to take 12 west from Lodi.
(we are south of 150 miles south of lodi)

Hwy 299 is approved for up to 45' motorhomes but you have to go slow.

See ya on the road.

I recently took I-5 to route 20 to 101 towing my truck. Route 12 is a good highway with some construction, but not too bad. The area around Clear Lake will slow you down a tad but it sure beats 299.

Since we live on the Southern Oregon coast and have relatives in Sacramento we travel South regularly--

This is written for traveling South but the info is the same for you
(I am just too lazy to re-word it)--

HWY 197/199 to Grants Pass and South--

OK but makes a big loop to the South then North before heading West to Interstate 5 (and takes you farther North than you need to travel)-- also less scenic--

HWY 299 West to Interstate 5 --

Arrrgh-- Nothing really awful (except right now there are fires and smoke) but it seems to take a week to get across there--

Hwy 101 South to HWY 20 and across to Interstate 5 at Williams--

This is the preferred route for most of us who live up here--

A 45' motorhome is legal on 299 from 5 to 101 according to the Caltrans Bus & Motorhome map. Click on map 1 and 3 for specifics. I will leave it to the others if there is a better route.
