Great photos Mike,
The last one you posted shows Lake Como, still frozen over and looking closely at it, shows the start of the infamous, IMHO, Poughkeepsie Gulch trail/road. LOL
The "fastest" way back to the Ouray area from the top of Hurricane or California passes. Not a recommended way to get down from there in my opinion though.
It is trips like the one you took that the family will remember, not the ones where you cruised down a smooth highway on the way somewhere. My daughters, 29 and 31 now, still laughingly bring up some of the "near disaster" family outings we did together, never remembering the times "dad" put together a near flawless trip. LOL
Don't know much about the Lake City side of the hills. I used to make several runs a summer from Ouray over to Camp Red Cloud, a summer camp just out of Lake City, hauling Jeep loads of kids. (3 kids) We would go over Engineer, drop down to Cinnamon Pass and across to Red Cloud and return solo. Then a week or so later repeat the trip to pick up the kids. There would be a "caravan" of 4 or more 4 X 4s making the trip so it was lots of fun.

joe b, I agree on Engineer. Last time I crossed it, it was raining and really nasty. The slick rock can peg the pucker factor! But still, a great drive in the proper vehicle. There was a guy in front of me in a Ford Explorer that wished he hadn't tried it. My jacked up Blazer I had at the time, made it fine, and we had lots of clearance. The Explorer bottomed out several times.

Did Engineer with my mother many years ago. She kept grabbing the hand strap and making lots of noises and comments. Finally, at one particularly off camber section, I causually commented that "I didn't know the roll over angle of my pickup". Not another peep the rest of the trip!

Did Engineer from Silverton over to Lake City for lunch and back to Silverton via Cinnamon last week. Lots of snow up there. It rained on us coming down Cinnamon. We had a great time.

Thanks everyone for all the tips on going over the passes in Colorado.
We just got home and enjoyed every bit of it.
Our very last trip was trying to get over to Emerald Lake in Crested Butte but a huge junk of snow in the middle of the road stopped us on two different roads. This time, no one got through, not even ATVs and/or Jeeps so we didn't feel that bad
What a beautiful part of the state the SW is. It was simply amazing. We are looking forward to our next visit.
