I have noticed several choices in the RV section of our local Walmart but have no idea which ones work best. We don't have an RV supply store in our hometown so I'd like to use what is available. Which toilet supplies are best and how do I use them? Our first trip is scheduled for 07/18 so I am attempting to gather necessary info and supplies. Our TT will be new...right from the manufacturing plant so the tank will be "fresh". Thanks for your help!

Skip the chemicals and go with the Geo Method. Search the internet or on this site for specifics. I tried all different chemicals, and none truly worked. Switched to Geo and no odors or clogs. All guages work, even black tank after 2.5 years! Saves money and beter for environment too.

I use the drop in packs for WalMart. Easy to use and no problems.

I use the blue stuff and about every 3-4 dumps I pour in a couple cups of fabric softener. I have a Quick-i-Flush installed and I never have a problem with odors or clogs and my gauges always work. I looked into the Geo method but it seemed to be too big of a hastle. People are always having a hard time finding the water softener.

I agree with jimfromvirginia except that you don't even need to follow the "Geo" method. We live in our trailer full time for three months in the winter and use it throughout the summer. We never put any chemicals in the tanks except when it is going to be stored for a period of time. We have also never had any odor or blockage problems either. The secret is using plenty of water every time you flush and then only dumping your tanks when they are at least 3/4 or more full. If your tank is not 3/4 or more full by the time you are ready to leave your campsite, put water in it until it is.
When finished dumping, add about 3 full toilet bowl full flushes back to the tank to keep it ready for the next use and to keep the valves lubricated.
Occasionally, we will add a few ounces of laundry or dishwasher detergent to the tank before we travel to help keep the tank sensors clean.
The other thing we do is use regular Scotts 1000 sheet single ply toilet paper. We get it by the case at Costco. No need to purchase that expensive "RV" toilet paper. Any single ply paper that says "septic safe" on the label will be fine.
When you go to use the toilet for #2, add some extra water to the bowl before sitting down and then hold the flush pedal (or lever) down for a few seconds after you are done. That should assure getting enough water to keep your tanks happy. The secret to not having tank problems is using plenty of water.
These are the things that work for us and we use our trailer a lot. If you follow what I have outlined above, you should have no toilet problems and also save some money by not spending it on chemicals or things you don't need. Remember, those are holding tanks and they don't need to be sanitized as you would for a fresh water tank. They are also not "septic tanks" as the stuff in there is not kept for very long and really does not have time to decompose like it would in a septic tank. They are just holding tanks to use until you get to a dump station.

Wondeful responses! Thank you all so very much! I had never heard of using fabric softener and the Scott's 1-ply for septic systems was a good tip too. I have saved a couple of empty milk jugs and plan on placing them under the bathroom sink to fill with water to use in the toilet when needed. I read that somewhere in one of the RV books I purchased. Something about using it to flush the dark water when emptying? Good idea or no?

I made the mistake of buying Scott's one time. Only used part of one roll. I have used outhouses on job sights with better tp. I use anything that says septic safe and have never had a problem. In the last four years, I have spent about 1.5 years in my tt.

Mike-
Is that bc it's "too tough"? I HATE harsh tp!!! So you recommend anything besides Scott's that says septic safe? Also, you mentioned earlier that you use "the blue stuff" but I neglected to ask exactly what that is. I just realized that you are the same Mike who responded to my other post regarding the weight limit of our TV and TT. I am truly appreciating your help today!

We switched to Scotts single ply "septic safe, 1,000 sheets" and like it a lot better than RV TP. Bonus it is a lot cheaper and when you go #2 it does not tear and get #2 on your hands. Three cheers for Scotts single ply. I'll never buy RV TP again.
