Does anyone know what would be a good installation point in a short bed truck for a huskey 15,000lb hitch -- non slider? I have a 2006 chevy 1500HD 4x4 (5'8 bed) and need to install the hitch but was not sure where to place it -- on axle, in front of axle, etc. I also have a 10inch pin box extension. The 5th wheel is a 2008 keystone cougar 29 ft. Would 42 inches be a safe clearing distance from cab to front of trailer? Thanks in advance!!!

I believe the "rule of thumb" is the PIN should be directly over the axle or as much as two inches forward of the axle. In any case, I would check with the manufacturer. You can probably download an instruction manual form their web site. I certainly would not locate the pin behind the axle in an attempt to gain more turning clearance.

Again, check with the builder of the hitch.

I hope this helps.

Do not mount the hitch behind the axel to get trailer clearance, it will put too much weight behind the axle and lighten your steering possibly to the point of being dangerous. Call Husky and see what they recomend. I'm sure if you did a web search you could find their phone number. Being you have a 1500 series truck with a 5'8" box you might have a problem getting enough clearance without a slider of some type. Check carefully as the damage from hitting the cab can get expensive and be very inconvient.

Best place to install that hitch is over the axle, in somebody else's long bed truck. In your truck, the best hitch is a slider. Mounted over the axles. And one that slides a minimum of 14 inches. It will clear a 96" width trailer with 2" to spare. As long as you remember to slide it back when needed.

I priced the slider hitches and they seem really expensive -- any advice on a reasonably priced slider hitch that could get the job done? I have a standard hitch with rails already but not installed yet. trying to do this right the first time around!!!

We have and recommend the Pullrite SuperGlide. You get what you pay for. With the short short box, good chance if you don't buy a slider you will be paying more for the repairs when you hit the cab with the trailer during a tight turn. Get an auto slider. Just imagine getting out in the dark or in a unsafe location or in a rain storm to release the handle on a manual slider. IF you remember!

More importantly see if PullRite recomends their hitch for your truck. They are expensive but as above in your situation might be the best answer. They do require a little more maintaince to keep sliding properly. A special lube and a specific frequency to keep from seizing up but it isn't very expensive, you just have to remember to do it. I have a short bed Dodge but it has a 6'6" box so it is a little different. Just a stationary hitch and an expended pin box, factory installed with about 14" extension. It can hit cab but can comfortably turn at least 60-70 degrees with absolutly no problem and further if careful.
