i have been told that placing the hitch 3 inches behind the axels will be ok

Whoever told you this does not know what they are talking about. A slider hitch will move the load point back behind the axle but only when making short turns and when towing down the road the load is correctly placed in front of the axle to apply some of the load to the front axle.

Thanks for all the info -- it really helps to get feedback from others who have shortbed trucks! i keep going back and forth between a superglide and am ez roller -- i have been told that placing the hitch 3 inches behind the axels will be ok -- your thoughts? In response to mikehart i measured the bed and it is 5'8 -- i have the 4 full doors on this truck.

Sorry for questioning you about it. Never saw or heard of a 1500hd coming with the 5'8" bed. Does it still have the 8lugs wheels and 8600#gvwr?

As for behind the axle, I wouldn't do it. You don't carry any of the load on the front tires that way. Same with over the axle. I would go at least 1" in front if it was me.

Hmmm...a 5.8 bed, 4 full size doors, 4x4. Sounds like a reg. 1500...not a HD. I'd be very weary of pulling a 29-30ft 5er with a true CC 1500 1/2 tonn. These trucks have the super short bed, not the 6.5 ft. bed = NO workee for me.

Doesn't sound like the HD to me either.

Do NOT install the hitch with the pin center behind the axle center when in the towing position. That is very WRONG. In front of the axle center is the correct position. It will slide back to behind the axle for manuevering at slow speed only.

I have a 2004 gmc 2500hd and an 02 Keystone Sprinter 275BHS. I have a standard reese 5th wheel hitch mounted over the axle. The company that installed it said it had to be installed over the axle.
I also installed a 10 inch extension that works just fine. You just have to pay attention to hilly camp sites. You still can't jackknife the camper but gives you alot more distance between cab and camper.
My suggestion is to install what you have and keep your eyes open for a good, used slider. Try Craigslist. This is what I am doing
because a slider is the best for a short bed truck. Craigslist had some in my area for around $250 but I was to slow in getting one.
Good luck
Brian
