We have decided upon our insurance for our new TT (GMAC thru Good Sam's)and believe that we have excellent coverage but now need to decide if we need an extended service contract in addition to our insurance. If I can get it at cost, would you recommend the 3, 5, or 7 year service contract or is this extra coverage even necessary? I have to make the decision by tomorrow morning when we complete all financing with the dealer so your prompt response would be much appreciated. Many Thanks!

The only one to lose money on a service contract is the one who buys it.

Everyone else makes money on it. Whoever sells it makes money. And whoever writes it makes money.

And you don't have to buy one tomorrow. You can gennerally buy them at any time.

What I mean is that in order to have it rolled into our financing, we need to make the decision tomorrow. So, do you feel that the manufacturer's warranty that comes with our new TT is sufficient and we should not do the extended service contract?

If you want to buy one do it after the manufacturers warranty expires, or you are throwing one year down the toilet. The Good sam is about the best you can buy and it can be purchased for any RV or TV under 10 years of age. Don't let the dealer feed you line, "you must buy it now or never" Simply a lie. Plus many dealers add $$$$$ on top of what these policies actually cost. My opinion is to wait. Also all of the major appliances come with their own warranty, some as much as three years. Many think when their 1 year manufacturer warranty expires they are on their own. Because they never bother to read all the info in your owners packet!! I myself never purchase these warranties because I am very handy and can fix 95% of things myself. If I were going to purchase one it would be the G.S. policy after all the other warranties expire.
Congrats on the new RV.

NCH-
Thank you for your help today...truly appreciated. The dealer is not pushing the service contract in the least. He informed us of the manufacturer's warranty and all that it covers but I was the one who asked about the service contract. We went with the Good Sam insurance. Those have got to be the nicest, non-pushy sales people I have ever dealt with. Based on our insurance dealings with them, I would certainly entertain doing a service contract as well...if/when needed. I do read everything...probably way over-analyze things...but the difference in what you mentioned is that my hubby is not a handyman...has interest but no time or patience. This is why I am so concerned about getting all the coverage we need. Thanks again!

Our extended warrenty cost will be refunded to us if not used. The catch is that the refund must be requested in writing within (I believe) 30 days of the expiration date. I will make SURE I have that date written on my calendar. I know the warrenties are sometimes pushed by the dealer and are also very costly, but we figured if we don't use it we will get 100% refund, and if we do run into any problems we will use it.

Wow! Great deal. Good for you! I haven't heard of anything like this before. Anyone else? Is this common? Should I consider asking the dealer for this before negating the service completely?

We had that on a new car that was a lease. When we turned the car in I wrote them (within the 30 days) kind of surprised them as no one else remembers to do it. Took a few weeks but got the entire amount back.

The answer to your question is: It depends

I normally do not buy service contracts cause I know the insurance co is out to make a profit, they do that by only returning a portion of the premimum

However when I bought the computer that I call main. It was used returned for upgrade.. Something (Cosmetic damage to the case where the prior owner had hammered it with his fist in frustration) told me to buy the contract

Good thing.. The computer that's in that case now is not the one I bought, it's the one they replaced it with under warranty

Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

That's a nice story John. But, buying a used computer has nothing to do with buying a Recreational Vehicle.

Good luck on keeping up on that 24 posts a day average.
