Today we drove the Beartooth Hwy in the jeep. OMG what an awesome road. I would not take my coach up there, however I did see one my size pulling a jeep going through. The road is narrow and there are many many areas straight down with no guardrails. Not that a guardrail will stop you anyway. I have been on "Going to the Sun Highway" in Glacier National Park and have to say that "The Beartooth" is my favorite of the two. We did the loop from Cody, WY using SR 120, then SR 296 (Chief Joseph Scenic Hwy), then 212 to Red Lodge. From Red Lodge MT, we took the flatlands back to Cody via route MT SR 308, MT SR 72 that turns into WY 120 at the state line. If you are in the area don't pass up the drive. One note on 308 about six miles east of Red Lodge you will see the remains of a mining site. This is the location of the Smith Mining Disaster MT worst coal mine disaster killing 74.

It's a beautiful place to drive. If you don't have any problems falling off the road NORMALLY there's no reason you should fall off if it on the Beartooth The thing that makes it more pleasurable than the Sun road is the lack of heavy traffic. They're both beautiful drives.

Ozark - Yes, the Beartooth is one of our favorite highways too! I was involved in the reconstruction design of several MT portions back in the 90's, but haven't been back to view the results. Glad you checked out the coal mine area, not many people stop by there. Hopefully we'll get up on the Beartooth next year, and also the Chief Joseph Highway which I've never driven. Glad you had a good trip!

I was on the 'tooth right after it re-opened. Always preferred it to GTTS road which is in my front yard. The routes are listed as WY120 or MT72, never saw them posted as SR's - must be an Eastern thing.

I spent 7 days in the area in 2006. The tooth and Chief the Joseph were some of the best motorcycle riding I have ever done. Also near the old mining town there was a restaurant that served one of the best stakes I had on the trip. The unique thing there was the "pig races". Out back there was a miniature race track set up like a horse track, the pigs were placed in the gate and the gate raised. The pigs ran around the track to get to the food at the end of the track. Patrons of the restaurant made small wagers on the pigs and the winners spilt the pot with a charity that provided scholarships money to children. This place is out in the middle of nowhere and most nights you need reservations to get in.

If it was me doing it from the Bridge I would go out the East entrance to Cody then North on 120 to jct 296 left over Dead Indian Pass and up the Sunlight Basin (Chief Joseph Scenic By-way) to 212 then right and up and over the Beartooth to Red Lodge, Mt. Coming home back over the Tooth to Cooke City and visit the old General Store there and back into the park at the NE Entrance to Tower Jct, then South over Dunraven Pass to Canyon Vilage then South to home. A great all day trip with beautiful scenery all the way. Don't forget the cameras and binocs.

Hi All,
We will be in Yellowstone the 19th for two weeks, coming from Wis. Thought about doing the Beartooth on the way, but saw that there was a cycle rally that week. Have changed are plans and will drive thru from the Tetons on the way home or take a day from Madison campground and head up. Wayward1, any idea on how long of trip time wise you are talking about on your route? If we start from the Tetons we would probably stay over night in Red Lodge or drive on to Billings. Thanks.

Easier to go the opposite direction. Exit the park via Lamar Valley & NE Entrance, have breakfast at the Soda Butte Hotel in Cooke City, then up and over the 'tooth, downhill it to Red Lodge, have a nice lunch in town, then either back across the 'tooth or down to Cody and back. It's a full day trip.
