Ford is going with a twin turbo direct injected V6 to supposedly replace many of it's V8's. V8 power when needed but good mpg under normal driving. I know many turbo 4 cylinders that when kept out of the boost get very good mileage as they are essentially a small displacement 4.
The same is true for Toyota and Lexus, Nissan and Infiniti. Some people are "upper class" and would rather drive a Lincoln Navigator vs. a pedestrian Ford Expedition. Sad but true.
True to a small degree...Some platform sharing goes on with Lexus and Infiniti.
But most Lexus and Infiniti models are completely different vehicles / platforms that are not available under the Toyota and Nissan nameplates in the US.
E.g. Lexus LS, IS, SC, GS...Infiniti M, G, EX, FX...you can't get any of these cars as Toyotas or Nissans, they are 100% exclusive to the Lexus and Infiniti nameplates.

Infiniti FX35 is a Nissan Murano with different dash styling and slightly different body. Both are on the same car chassis (forget if it's the Maxima or Altima, have the same engine and powertrain, same dual exhaust, same CVT. The FX45 is not available as a Nissan.

Was it not up to new EPA emissions? Or was it just not as "cool" as newer designed OHC engines?
I'm not sure. The ' ' factor I don't think is a factor as GM is replacing the venerable Buick OHV V6 with it's high value (euphemism for cheap to build ?) 3.5/3.9 60 degree OHV V6.
Think it was much cheaper to produce than the 60 degree 'high value' V6 (3.5/3.9 liter V6) that apparently will go into the Buicks for 2009. I've had three 'high value' ( two 2.8's, one 3.1) and I've had expensive repairs on them.
They certainly weren't 'high value ' for me, but with the repairs done at the GM dealership, I can only guess who got the high value.
GM may of lost me, if they just offer the 60 degree OHV six. I wouldn't get another car with that particular engine.
GM tried to dump the Buick 90 degree, 3800 back in '99, but I understand there was so many complaints about doing this , both from their dealers and customers that they gave this great old engine a reprieve till, eventually 2008.
I think it was a case of having continuity of engine types and therefore scale of economy, throughout the the Divisions (that's a policy that has really helped GM-when there gets to be little difference in choice with the different divisions).
This policy of using the same parts started GM on their downward spiral in the '80's. Recall the Ford ad where the parking valet, continually gets mixed up when asked to bring the customer's '80's fwd Caddy and first brings an fwd Olds 98,-wrongo, then brings a Buick fwd Park Avenue-wrong..as they all look the same. Meanwhile another parking valet got the '80's Lincoln Continental right the first time. People, IMO, started wondering what's the difference and why am I paying more for essentially the same car.
The 60 degree V6 is also built off shore now (China) and it's cheaper to build and 'import' back to North America than build it over here.
The Buick 3800 is built, I believe in Michigan.
I think that may have something to do with it, but I'm just speculatin' .

That's not true at all.
Murano = transverse (sideways) engine, FWD FF-L platform, engine hangs off the front, predominantly FWD even in AWD guise.
FX35 = longitudinal (north-south) engine, RWD FM platform with rear-biased AWD, engine center of mass is behind the front axle.
The FX platform is a modified RWD Infiniti G platform that the Nissan Z also shares (but no other Nissans).
The Murano platform is a modified FWD Altima/Maxima platform that is not used on any Infiniti.
I guess I stand (or sit) corrected. I can't believe that salesman lied to me!
Oh, wait, yes I can. . . cause he did about the fact that it "prefers" premium fuel for optimum performance. I asked him directly three times and he said, "No".
My questions were:
1) Does it need premium fuel?
2) Do they recommend premium fuel?
3) Did they use premium fuel to obtain the rated MPG on the sticker?
It was my fault for not looking in to it on my own, but - I can't believe how clearly and directly I worded it three times in a row. We took a trip to Wichita and got terrible fuel economy (got the city rating on a freeway trip), and that's when I finally found the wording (not on the gas lid, in the manual - one little line tucked away) "For optimum performance, use premium fuel." We did the calculations and the improvement in economy was worth the cost of the better fuel.
At least the general manager of the dealership stood up, reprimanded the salesman (because he said they'd been trained on the fuel requirements - and if he wasn't sure, he could've paused to find out - but he answered me matter-of-factly), and gave me 2 years of free oil changes.
Anyway, we sold our Murano and were never in the market for the Infiniti (was much nicer, but. . . where would the other $12,000 have come from?).

Some of these Hummer haters don't have a clue. I traded a truck that never saw 15 mpg for the H3 that gets me up to 21 highway.
Goes anywhere we used to go with Jeeps. And we use the 4x4 for what it was built for, not malls. Replaced two vehicles with one. Rides better than a Jeep or a truck, too.
So if you don't like it, I suggest you go on over to the Prius owner's forums and start posting about your RV.
That's all of my soapboxing.

My wife is under 40 and loves her Buick. (It's a Grand National.)
It's also a GAS HOG going on 30 years old.......what's your point except to clearly troll it?
You didn't do too well in math when in school, did you? It's 22 years old (1986)...and this fire-breathing 2-ton car gets pretty good mileage. She managed just over 23MPG on the Power Tour...not bad for a 10-second street car.
