Well, I am glad to hear that it isn't affecting to many people. That is why we are looking at lighter and more aerodynamic now. The toy hauler we were looking at was nice, but it was heavy.

To mikehart92: I'm guessing you could tell by the subject what it was about, yet you still opened it up and responded.

To jimroach: It hasn't affected us yet.

We are actually going more. When I get old, gray, and poor, I want to have great memories. I think the days of saving for a great retirement are a thing of the past. We are working full time and can get out to have fun. If we try to save for doing this stuff later, I really don't see any way to do it then on a fixed income. Heck, we will have to work well into our 70's. When we wont be able to work, we won't be able to rv.

First off "Thank you for your service to Our Country"
We have a 37 ft toy hauler and love it. As for the trips we just make sure when we go a distance 200 miles or greater that we stay longer. We have started making several shorter trips and really enjoy that. As I am still working we just go as we can. Good luck with ur search.

No change here. But I will have to agree with MASKINS we are just going on shorter trips more often.

We're not supposed to talk politics in this forum (for good reason) and I won't, but I do think that our gas problems will magically be resolved after November... Given this, I think that it's a bit premature to declare RVing dead yet.

Not caused us to change our plans - 22,000 miles so far and still rollin'

For someone that has spent time in Iraq, I thought you would be the first to realize that we have one life to live and we should live it as best we can. What's a few extra bucks for gas if the upside is the enjoyment of doing what you want, when you want.
If you wanted a Toy Hauler and it's what gives you pleasure then live your dream - you are fighting oppression on our behalf and we thank you, but don't let fear of 'gas prices' oppress you. An extra $200 here and there is unlikely to break the bank, you just have to adjust your budgets accordingly.

Nope, just got back from a 3100 mile trip to Glacier Nat park. Had a blast and didn't let gas prices bother us. You'll have to excuse me now as I have to go look for a 2nd job!

No, it has not and will not change our travels. We spend a lot of time in Canada and usually enter through Saskatchewan.

When we drove our SUV, stayed in motels and ate in restaurants, our expenses were between $200-$250 per day, not including fuel. We drove for at least 10 hours, then would search for a motel with a vacany, unpack the SUV, drag everything up a flight of stairs, eat wherever and whatever we could find (many times nothing was open) and then the maid would wake us early, we would repack the SUV and get back on the road. Miserable.

A few days ago I checked for flights to Regina, SK. The cheapest rate for 2 round trip flights was $1,700 and would require that we rent a vehicle for the 2 month trip across Canada. Not to mention that we would have to pay a lot to take all the things we need for hunting, etc. on a plane and the 3 stop overs and plane changes along the way.

Based on our last trip, even with the high cost of fuel it was cheaper to travel in the MH, much more comfortable, no packing/unpacking every day, we were able to eat our own food and sleep in our own bed.

At $225 per day, our last trip would have cost us $13,450 just for hotels/motels and restaurants. Add air fare and car rental and we would have had to spend over $17K. The MH trip for over 2 months cost $5,300 for fuel, food, supplies and of course, living accomodations.

To me there is no comparison. We have traveled Europe and stayed in 4 and 5 star hotels, eaten at expensive restaurants and were never as comfortable as we are in the MH.

We have now taken 2 long trips. I figure we have saved about $12K on each trip and I just mentally deduct this amount from the initial cost of the MH. At 12K per trip we will reap the benefit of the purchase in about 6 more trips.

If you are going to take vacations, RVing is the only way to go as far as I am concerned.

Shop around and get the best RV for your particular needs. You will not regret it.

Iris
