I would like to know if any one out there pulls a 5er with a short bed pickup that doesn't use a slider hitch. And if there is what safty measures do you use to make sure the 5er doesn't hit your cab.
Thanks for any in put you can give.

I don't have one on my truck, I use the gooseneck ball. It's never been a real problem not being able to make a 90 degree turn backing up, but haven't had it that long. The only safety measure I've used is my 16 year old son yelling "Daaaaad!" when the 5er got close to the cab corner.

When I had a shortbed I would just pay close attention to how close they got when backing up and when turning sharp going forward.

I had a short bed GM 2500HD without the slider, never felt like I needed a slider but then again, I can't think of ANY situation that would put me at 90 degrees to the truck, imagine what that is doing to the tires and axels on the trailer... *shudder*

We just started towing a 5th wheel this year. Had TTs before. We do not have a slider and have never been or felt close to hitting the cab. Like others, we have the kids watch and pay close attention to how close we are getting. Has not been an issue so far.

A lot depends on the shape of the front of the 5er and the pin box. Some have wide squared off lower front corners. Some have recessed or contoured corners. The big squared corners will give you less turn radius. The recessed ones will increase your turn radius. A longer pin box will increase your turn radius.
I have a friend who knocked out the back window of his F250 short bed backing his Coachmen 5er with squared corners (and extended pin box) at less than 90 degrees.

My F250 has a short bed and no slider hitchl, with our 5er I have never even come close to hitting the cab.
