Out west, 90% of farmers and loggers would not drive anything but a Ford. My brother owns a logging company. He recently bought some logging equipment that included a late model Chevy. He said he covered it up with a tarp in his shop, so nobody could see it till he got it sold.

90% of statistics can be made to say whatever you want, 50% of the time.

I wonder what the point is of having the F-250 since the F-150 is a better truck in many respects.

..... and in many ways it isn't!! There is much more to a truck besides engine size. As for what happens in the future I don't care, with my Y2K only having 71K on the dial I will have this truck until the Lord calls me home, at least I hope so. If Toyota ever imports their 1 ton dually diesel, and offers a true Full size truck it may be the end of Ford, Dodge and Chevy. I saw a photo of the proposed 1 ton dually Toyota and it was a very sharp looking truck that would give the American made trucks a run for their money. I read in a magazine that Toyota just became the number 1 selling truck last year. Ford has held this position for years and this is the first time a foreign owned manufacturer has held this title. My advice would be to buy up the clean 7.3's while they are selling so cheap, it is a buyers market right now if you need a good tow vehicle.

Toyota is nowhere close to Ford in truck sales. Overall sales, now thats a different story

I also think that 25-30 mpg is wishful thinking.

The Land Rover 3.6 gets mid to high 20's highway. The F150 is going to get the new 4.4 and newer technology. Both are similar weights and the engines are designed from the same company and block.

The Excursion diesel could regularly get 20's highway.

There will always be a market for HD trucks. Farming and Construction relies heavily on them. The only one I see that would be in jeopardy is the F450 pickup. Their one heck of a truck, but outside of pulling large RV's, I just dont see much of a market for them.

Come to Texas... most utilities/phone companies/contractors are using them now..... heck, I drive one at work I drive and most of the new ones are either 350/450's

That surprises me somewhat. Up here the F450 is common, but its the F450 chassis truck with an upfitted utility or contractors box, not the F450 pickup.

I think the heavy duty (2500/3500..250/350) pickup trucks will last....just maybe not in the same numbers as say previous 15 years or so. I think fewer will be getting the large trailers that need to be towed by the HD pickups and most of the market for HD P/U's will return back to it's original market, farm/ranch/commercial/construction.

The reason for drop in sales on the F150 is poor mpgs. People were using them as their everyday ride. At 13mpg that hurts.

Ford will put the small diesel in the F150 and get 25-30mpg. This will boost sales. IF they don't boost the mpgs on the F150 it could be dead. It not much of work truck.

The F250 will be around for a long time. It fits a niche in the work field.

There are F150's everywhere in New Enland being used as work trucks. They dominate the fleet market. Perhaps they are not plowing snow for landscapers or doing heavy towing but they are work trucks none the less. Not sure where you get off with calling them not much of a work truck.

IMHO seeing all the F350 allegedly has different than a F250 is a larger spacer on the rear axle it is a no brainer. Kill the "3/4" ton and make one SD model. Don't even try and tell me the 250 rides nicer, your kidding yourself people. Perhaps make a payload package option to make the 250 a 350? Makes no sense making the same truck with two badges. If Toyota comes out withtheir HD I'm willing to bet it will be one model with 1 ton/350/3500 specs. Not two versions with a 3/4 ton/250/2500 model.

I am hoping to see the smaller F-100 maybe offered with a torquey I-4 diesel that returns 30+mpg, but the mighty SuperDutys will still be needed.

It could very similar to the Ford Ranger they sell in Australia(it actually will be designed in Australia). The Non-US Ford Ranger has a 3 Litre Diesel, that carries a cargo of 3000lb and tows 6,600lb with a standard manual. People here chip them up and also inject LPG to increase the torque figure.

Once in a wild blue moon I see an F450 pickup. I see lots and lots of F450 chassis-cab trucks with various work beds on them though.

Seems the horse people in the Virginia/Maryland area have taken to the F-450 pickups. Last event at the Equestrian center there must have been at least two dozen new 450's hitched up to large trailers along with many 450/550 cab chassis trucks. They might not sell as many as the 250/350 but they do sell quite well.
