With the new 2009 F-150 coming out and the glut of trucks on dealer lots I wonder where the market is for the F-250. Ford has supposedly delayed production of the F-150 for two months. I wonder if they arent spending this time thinking about putting a diesel in the truck sooner than later. Next year when the F-150 gets the diesel what will be the point of the Superduty? The Super Duty sales are down 40% and the Kentucky plant is laying off 300 workers. Looking at the F-150 next to the F-250 I wonder what the point is of having the F-250 since the F-150 is a better truck in many respects.

The F-150 won't be as capable as the F-250. I'm guessing the F-250 will go back to being a work truck for the most part.

In two words: load capacity. A 3/4 ton will provide more towing and hauling capacity than a 1/2 ton. Only the lightest of 5th wheels can be towed by a 1/2 ton, and then generally there is no hauling capacity left for people and cargo. 3/4 tons fit a nice niche in that they can be used to tow a medium-sized fifth wheel and haul all the people and cargo you would want to take camping.
While the 150 may have more in-cab tech than today's 250's, a 250 is a more capable tow vehicle all around: bigger brakes, more power, more capacity, etc. You just have to choose which one will fit both your towing/hauling needs and your boulevard bling.

I think they should drop the F-250. It's sort of like a redheaded step child. If you need a light duty truck get a F-150. If you need a heavy duty truck get an F-350 in either SRW or DRW.

The Superduty trucks will survive. They will always be needed by businesses for hauling and service work. We will see fewer of them sold to families who use them for day to day running around instead of working, hauling and towing like they were made to do. Those families will buy smaller more economical trucks instead, like the F150.
Yes, Ford should put a small fuel efficient diesel in the F150 sooner than later. They should not put another overgrown fuel guzzling big diesel in it though, or they won't be accommplishing anything. Save those for Superduties that need the power.

SuperDuty's will be around for a long time. Tens of thousands are purchased every year for work. Just look to see the brand of choice that is bought by municipalities, government, contractors. I am hoping to see the smaller F-100 maybe offered with a torquey I-4 diesel that returns 30+mpg, but the mighty SuperDutys will still be needed.

There will always be a market for HD trucks. Farming and Construction relies heavily on them. The only one I see that would be in jeopardy is the F450 pickup. Their one heck of a truck, but outside of pulling large RV's, I just dont see much of a market for them.

Yep it'll survive because it's still the biggest seller. I'd be more concerned about some of the brands that sell FAR fewer units than Ford.

I agree. Get rid of all the bling and bring the price down to a reasonable level. I'm looking at an XLT for a new TV. I don't want/need leather, sunroof, etc in a truck that will sit when not being used. I do want power windows and mirrors and the XL doesn't offer that.

An idea would be to just make a Super Duty. Use the F350 and eliminate the 250.
A potential line up would be:
F100 (tad larger Ranger)
F150 (general purpose uses for most non HD work)
F200 (New SD, rated at the now F350 capability)
The F150 has crept into the F250's domain and there are few differences between the current 250 and 350 so just make one. Lower production cost and just as capable,
