I suspect when Ford does put a diesel in the F150, it will be the biggest engine they can cram under the hood. So it will be nose-heavy and have even less capacity.

The F250 name has too much recognition to be discontinued. I could see Ford making an F150, an F250 and an F350DRW and eliminate the F350SRW, just call it the F250, since they are practicaly the same anyways and eliminate some naming overlap.
Dodge used to do this in the '90s. There was no 3500 SRW. You got to choose the 1500, the 2500, which could be ordered with heavy duty axle and suspension (called the camper pkg), and the 3500, which was only offered with dual rear wheels. The 2500 with camper pkg was basicaly a 3500 with single rear wheels.
Or... big new idea here... drop all the 150/250/350/450/550 naming baloney and call them by their GVWR's. There could be the 7000, the 8500, the 9900, the 13,000, the 16,000, and the 19,000. That would more accurately describe the trucks. As it is, a 150 now days has as high a GVWR as a 250 from 10 or more years ago and the 350 DRW trucks are almost up to what the commercial 450 trucks were years ago too.

The reason for drop in sales on the F150 is poor mpgs. People were using them as their everyday ride. At 13mpg that hurts.
Ford will put the small diesel in the F150 and get 25-30mpg. This will boost sales. IF they don't boost the mpgs on the F150 it could be dead. It not much of work truck.
The F250 will be around for a long time. It fits a niche in the work field.

Come to Texas... most utilities/phone companies/contractors are using them now..... heck, I drive one at work I drive and most of the new ones are either 350/450's

Quote: I wonder what the point is of having the F-250 since the F-150 is a better truck in many respects.
..... and in many ways it isn't!! There is much more to a truck besides engine size. As for what happens in the future I don't care, with my Y2K only having 71K on the dial I will have this truck until the Lord calls me home, at least I hope so. If Toyota ever imports their 1 ton dually diesel, and offers a true Full size truck it may be the end of Ford, Dodge and Chevy. I saw a photo of the proposed 1 ton dually Toyota and it was a very sharp looking truck that would give the American made trucks a run for their money. I read in a magazine that Toyota just became the number 1 selling truck last year. Ford has held this position for years and this is the first time a foreign owned manufacturer has held this title. My advice would be to buy up the clean 7.3's while they are selling so cheap, it is a buyers market right now if you need a good tow vehicle.

A 150 will never hold a plow like a 250 or 350....So, unless snowplowing is also going the way of the dodo, I anticipate to see 250s and 350s for a while
Happy trails!!

Out west, 90% of farmers and loggers would not drive anything but a Ford. My brother owns a logging company. He recently bought some logging equipment that included a late model Chevy. He said he covered it up with a tarp in his shop, so nobody could see it till he got it sold.

I suspect the price of the new F150 Diesel (loaded out) will be in the range of the F250 Diesel base XLT. I also think that 25-30 mpg is wishful thinking. I think the F250/350 will always be around. It is a good truck.
