Allow me to separate myth from fact with the F-150 and mpgs on a medium size V-8. My 06 CC 4x4 5.4L F-150 does an average of 17 mpg with a good mix of about 60/40 highway/city driving and there are plenty of mountains I have to go up and down where I live. On more of a highway only I get about 18-19 mpg>>> and no I don't rely on the on board computer, I calculate when I fill up miles driven divided by gallons purchased at the station. Towing a 7500lb travel trailer that drops to about 10-11 mpg. The only regrets I have about my truck are I should've bought an F-250 SD when I had the chance but oh well, the F-150 is a very capable truck, it would just be nice having a diesel to tow my camper.
13 Mpg on a 1/2 ton are from the days of carbureted V-8's. I have an uncle with a 03 Ford Ranger 4x4 and he was not too happy to hear that my F-150 does like 3 mpg less than the Ranger.

Ohhhh, no, now this has turned into a debate over Ford's 5.4 V8 fuel mileage.

LOL, reading a bunch of truck owners discuss fuel mileage...Is kind of like listening to a bunch of fisherman discuss who has caught the biggest fish. How does that ol' saying go, "First liar doesn't stand a chance.."

..And my 6.8 V10 beats that 5.4 on mileage ANY day. I get 30 mpg towing our 8200 lb trailer with it, doing 70 mph up 15% grades.

(hahahahaha, and if you believe that, I got a bridge to sell you..)

Annnnywaaaay, back to the original topic: Nope, the Ford super duty is not going ANYWHERE, unless Toyota or Nissan start making a 3/4 or 1 ton truck much better. Way too much demand for these trucks and their higher payload capacity. As already stated, what will probably happen, is these superduty trucks will go back the way they used to be - they'll only be owned/used by folks that truly need their towing prowess and payload capacity (contractors, utility companies, heavy haulers, etc). Fuel prices will make it very difficult for an average Joe to own them, and use them for everyday commuting. Those days are probably numbered.

Not sure I agree that the 250 could go away, either, leaving just the 350. Granted, the two are almost identical except for a few parts, but the lower GVWR on the 250 makes it less expensive to own, register, insure, etc. in many areas. That makes for a good bit of demand for the 250 (not to mention the name recognition that goes with F250, as already said).

14mpg mixed driving is pretty good with a 5.4L or better small block. Your carburated V8's got less than 13mpg in many cases. Not saying you can't get 17mpg in a 5.4L but either you acclerate very gently or have no hills where you commute. I get about 14-15mpg around town with a 5.6L with a gentle right foot and I can get just over 19mpg on the highway at 65mph. Add speed or hard acceleration and watch the mpg drop. Your 17mpg claim for the F150 exceeds the window sticker city rating by 2-3mpg. If there were a poll here I think you'd see more getting 14-15mph daily driving than 17mpg.

I could see a gas fullsized V8 truck getting 19 driving 55 MPH. They should, many are rated right at that for all highway miles.

The high teens for a 5.4L has to be highway.

No doubt. I get 14-16 mixed. Went on a 175 mile trip (each way) recently through the cascade mountains at 70 mph+ with 5 people (2 adults, 3 kids) and gear for a long weekend (cooler, bags, toys, etc.) and got 19.4mpg on the way there and 20.1mpg (calculated for both) on the way back. 5.4L, 3.73, 4x4. Could have gotten more by watching speed a little closer but I was ok with the result. It's not tough to get in the 20's highway with the F150 5.4L.

The reason for drop in sales on the F150 is poor mpgs. People were using them as their everyday ride. At 13mpg that hurts.

Not quite. Ford's two V8 are closer to 20mpg. The 4.6 does lower 20s and the 5.4 high teens. Even the V10 does better than 13.

You must be thinking of the Hemi (pre MDS) or GM's big 8.1L V8 or the older 6.0L...

Nope, I've owned F150's all my life. My first being a 1952 F100 Flat head V8..

I got 13mpg on my last F150 in mixed driving and that was a 4.6. I got 17 on straight highway. Never got anywhere near 20mpg.

I get 17+ mpg commuting 24 miles one way every day with 70% highway miles. The best thing I did to increase my mpg was SLOW DOWN. A 5 mph decrease in speed gave me 1 mpg increase in fuel economy. My truck is a '04 F150 SCrew 4x4 with 3.73 and we have more than rolling hills around here. I'm sure 3.55s would get me a little more, but I need the towing ability the 3.73s give me.

I'm sure the Superduty will survive just fine. It's too strong of a brand and the trucks have proven pretty good over the years at their allotted roles. With a few minor hiccups (or major, depending on your point of view), Ford has hit a winner with the F250/F350/F450 and so on series.

You can go to a the Ford website and price out an XLT F150 and an XLT F250, same motor (4 speed vs 5-spd torqshift tranny), and VERY similar (minor differences) in options, and the F250 will be pretty much the same price (4.10 rear end vs 3.73).

In some respects, the F250 can be a better deal. Probably not fuel mileage, as it is a heavier truck.

If anything, the Superduty line will not be as popular for weekend grocery getters if gas prices hold up.

My wife's 2001 SCrew 4x2 4.6L 3.55 got 22 mpg on a 400 mile trip to the coast and back. We also had a fabric bed cover on it and ran 65 mph. It can be done.
