Heating costs are a function of insulation, solar gain, and among other things, The difference in the inside and outside temperatures. The greater the difference in temperatures, the more energy ($$$) needed to keep it there. Lowering the thermostat will lower the heating bill. Your energy provider might be able to provide you with estimates of the savings.

Glenn

Go to South Florida. I wore shorts and sandals all during January and February this year. This was my first snow birding experience this year and it was great! I made my reservations for next winter while at the campground, a year in advance. I did that last year and couldn't get the site I wnated since it was already booked, over a year in advance. One campground I checked had a 5 year waiting list. It will be interesting to see how the cost of gasoline effects sonwbirding this year. But, last year, what I saved in heating my house really helped offset the cost of snowbirding.

Have a great time! Make your reservations ASAP.

Thanks so much for all the info. We had actually contacted Quartzside chamber of Commerce and they sent a list of events scheduled as well as list of RV parks belonging to their chamber. We do have a daughter and her family who lives in Tucson.
We just got back from Niagara Falls, Ontario but went by car because of gas prices. Only gone 8 days. Since we will be gone at least a month or more, think gas prices won't be a big problem. We'll just deal with it. Money for gas or those darn Wisconsin winters. A no-brainer. Thanks again.

Polishnurse, you WILL NOT save anywhere near $2000.00 by turning your heat down to 50 degrees. Once your house hits 50 your furnace will work just as hard to keep it there as it does at 70. Think about it. NY is cold in the winter and 50 or 70 make no difference. Duh.

I take your "Duh" as a direct insult to your intelligence, and would suggest if you don't know anything a subject that you stay off your friends computer.

I won't go into the engineering side of Delta "T"s with you, but will ask one simple question that may or must likely not be able to answer to justify your "Duh". Answer me this Duh man. Why do people bother purchasing set back thermostats, guess your answer would be "so they know it's time to go bed because there getting cold" Duh

This is for our reading from 1992

If you can remember back to the 70's I know that is pretty far back for you, the nation {except you I guess} was asked to turn there thermostats down to 68 to save fuel, bet that was a waste time by your standards.

Guess I said enough, I wish you a good day. Bill

Thank you Bill for saving me from having to comment on the duh. I set mine down to 40 when I leave for south Florida. My heat hardly runs and here in the mountains we have cold but not by NY standards.

I won't quote numbers but we set our stat at 50 and turn the water heater to vacation and our gas usage plummets and we have 3 to 5 months credit on our budget plan. Originally they came out to check our meter as they thought it was defective! Definitely subsidizes our 3 months elsewhere in the cooold times!

Hi All,
Being from a bit farther north of Minn. or Wisc (where all your cold air comes from) I have to agree with most of whats said. Turn it down to 45-50,shut off the HW and drain a bit out. and most important..DRAIN THE WATER LINES EMPTY..a friend came home this spring having been in Palm Springs. He hadn't drained his lines and his furnace quit. The house checker left it for 3 days..it went to -50C with windchill. well guess he got a $25,000 suprise when it warmed up the house. All the joints had sprung leaks.
All that was required was to open the laundry tub tap and all the upstairs taps etc for a few mins Turn off the toilet taps and flush and fill with plumbers AF. The house was maybe 10-12 yrs old..
As for the costs lets see..-50C..snow ice snot always chilled vs 70F..sunny shorts beer.
I've done Fla when fuel was a 1.97 a gal. Texas when it was up to 3.00 and AZ,NM, calf. when it was up to 4.00.. Were going to Fla this winter temps only vary 5-15 degrees between nite/day unlike NM and areas of AZ. Gone in Oct back home in April..Did I mention the bitter freezing cold
