I have an Onan LP genset. I do not have a transfer switch, I have to manually plug the shore power cord into the genset receptacle.

Once it gets up to speed I apply the load. I have never timed it but it is probably 20 - 30 seconds.

I always turn off all major loads before shutting down the genset. No cool down period, just shut off loads and shut off genset.

Your procedure is just fine. That's about as "kind" of treatment as you can get. There's no hurry necessary for the "load" to be applied after starting. Once started though, I'd only add to let it thoroughly warm up once started.
