We are going there Aug 9-18. Anyone have any great restraunts to try in the area or other suggestions of things to do? Is there an ocean beach within close driving distance or is it just bay beaches? My kids love to boogie board and the bay doesn't cut it for that. Thanks!

Further South a few miles towards the Bridge/Tunnel, is a restaurant called "Stingrays" Also sell Exxon fuel etc. Great food. Wife says they have the best crab imperial that she has ever eaten. The fried scallops are my favorite. Not a fancy place, but really worth the trip. Get there before 5. Gets crowded after that.

Yes, Stingrays is the place to go.

The closest ocean beach would be Virginia Beach

Stingray's is the best food in that area. Check out Kiptopeke state park right down the road while you are there. We stayed at Cherrystone with our 2 teenagers one summer, but prefered Kiptopeke's campground. Cherrystone gets really crowded and the sites are close togetheer. Just my opinion.

Did the teens have enough to do? When I booked it, I asked about ocean beaches and the girl told me yes, but now with further research and looking at maps and satellite images, I realize there aren't any close by. We have heard wonderful things about the campground and we like a busy, active place with lots to do and it can't possibly have any tighter spots than Myrtle Beach! I'm just concerned now because my kids like crabbing to some extent but I don't know about 9 days worth with no boogie-board worthy beachtime!

We are going to be there the exact same week. We have been going every year for 16 years. There are lots of planned activities for kids. There is a very nice pool for your teens as well as putt putt.
If you are looking for the "beach" scene, then this may not be the place for you. You will have to drive through the Bay Bridge Tunnel to Virginia Beach for the beach outing, about a 45 mile drive, $12 toll one way. Maybe you can make a day trip out of this. .
We enjoy taking the cruise over to Tangier Island at Onancoke, VA. This is certainly a nice "family" outing. The food is much better there. We did not particularly care for Stingray's, each to his own. There is a little farmer's market in the campground that will cook to order or you can buy fresh seafood and take it back to your campsite and cook it.

Because they don't have beach access, Cherrystone has everything else. Pools, game room, movie night, lots of other kids, makes it a good choice for kids. We did a couple of day trips to the Kiptopeke beach access, where there were small waves. You could try the sandbridge area for good beach/surf activities. Sting Rays does not have a good menu for kids, FYI.

Thats what we did when we went to Cherrystone we just did a day trip to VA beach. We went during the weekday and found parking relatively easy with lots of decent restraurants right along the beach. My boys had a blast boogie boarding, great surf when we were there

A day trip to Virginia Beach would be worth it. If the waves aren't to your liking or if the weather turns iffy when you are there, stop at the Marine Science Museum , or Fort Story to climb Cape Henry Lighthouse (the old one 1799)
