About a month or so ago, I posted a question asking what the proper procedure was for plugging your coach into a 50 amp service. Although I got several responses, the topic seemed to get a little heated. Anyhow, yesterday I spoke with the owner of Progressive Industries. Those are the folks who make the EMSPT50C, as well as various other surge (portable and fixed) protectors for your RV's. I thought I'd share what was told to me regarding hooking and unhooking your power cord.
In regards to the initial hooking up of the power cord: You should turn off the power to the outside power source only. No need to kill the breakers inside the coach. If using the EMS system they sell, then you don't have to do that as the unit won't supply power to the coach for over 2 minutes anyhow.
Unhooking the power cord. This is something new I had not heard.......When unhooking your cord, do kill the breakers inside the coach before unplugging from the power source. This should apply to 50 amp service as well as 30.
I found this info helpful and hope you do too.

I cut the power post (power source) breaker off, plug in, then cut the breaker on. When unplugging, I cut the power post breaker off and unplug. I have never thrown the breakers inside my coach and really don't see the need.

When the "professionals" give advice like this, it sure would be nice if they gave the reasoning behind their instructions. WHY should we do it "their way", and what is likely to happen if we don't? How likely are the "dire consequences" to occur? Is their advice based on actual occurences, or on "maybes" (It has never happened, but it COULD!). Out of the millions of times RVs have been plugged in and unplugged, how many times have there been problems?
Then they wonder why people get paranoid or obsessive/compulsive.
This does bring up a question, though. When you plug in an appliance at home, should you trip the circut breaker first? How about when I plug the camper in at home to get the frig cold, should I trip the breaker first?

Well, how to unplug from shore power depends on the GVWR of your TV, and whether you have a long bed or short bed, and what type of slider hitch you have.
