I was talking to a Nevada Dodge Dealer today and he said that if I buy the Dodge 3500 I would need a commercial drivers license to register and drive in California because it is a 1 ton. He also said I would need commercial insurance which is more expensive. Does anyone know anything about this?

I was born with nothing and I still have some left.

Don't take me to court on this, but the only thing commercial about it are the plates. Open bed trucks have to pay for commercial plates in Ca. I don't think it affects my insurance and I sure as heck don't need a special drivers license. PS - I just traded in an F350 dually CCLB so there is your one ton evidence.

I bought my Dodge Ram 3500 (see sig) in Atascadero, CA. I wanted to register it in Montana, but the dealer said he couldn't give me the papers, they HAD to go through the State of CA so the tax would be paid. I did not have a CDL, and the dealer never even asked about what license I had. He just sent the paperwork in, and a week later we stopped in and picked up the (California) title and registration. The dealer WAS a little upset when I took the Montana license plates off my trade in, though. He seemed to think I should have left them on the truck. We had a heck of a time convincing him the plates were MINE, they didn't belong to the truck!
Anyway, check with CA DMV for the straight scoop on CA law. It is doubtful a dealer in another State knows as much as he thinks he does.
good luck.

Just for clarification, I feel about 99% right on the insurance. The drivers license is not true, no commercial license needed until bobcat size. And it ticks me off that some get out of commercial plates with E350 vans, because they can register them with the "personal"plates. The difference is the reg cars and vans have three letters in the plate. Commercial plates have only one, and of course, cost more.

Bull Dukie..... you don't need any special licence in California to drive a F350 SWD, DWD, or a 4 WD. or any 1 ton non commercial truck, the only thing you might need special is to have your class C licence with an endorsements but that is if your RV is more than 10,001 to 15 K not including the truck by the way, and I haven't heard of anybody getting stopped and asked for the licence with an endorsement yet. just for going to fast or a all over the road driver.

To just drive the truck the statement is flat out not true. Depending on the size you pull you may need something extra. You will pay a weight fee on the registration.

What type of licence do you need when you rent a uhaul moving truck?

also did you have to prove no animals were harmed in the building of that one ton truck.

I have a one ton pickup I use in my business and for personal use and we have a one ton cargo van for business use as well. Only a regular class D auto driver license is required to drive a one ton and only regular auto liability insurance is required to carry on the truck. The plates are commercial and we pay extra fees based on the GVWR of the trucks. About all the commercial plate means is the state collects extra money for it and we are allowed to park in a yellow commercial vehicle loading zone if we go downtown. Big whoopie.
