No special license is needed.
Tell that NV. dealer he's full of it!
The question is , How much will you be pulling?
Get all hooked up get a "Cat Scale cert." and go from there.
Enjoy your 1 ton.

Drivers license requirements are based on the GVWR of the vehicle and/or what it's towing ability is. All pick up trucks though are automatically registered with "commerical" plates in California.. even my "little" truck has commerical plates.

Check the California DMV web site for more information however he's a quick clip.

Quote:

A commercial vehicle is a motor vehicle or combination used for hire to transport passengers or property or which:

Has a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more
Is designed, used, or maintained for carrying more than 10 passengers, including the driver
Tows a vehicle or trailer, which has a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more
Transports hazardous materials, which requires placards
Tows any combination of two trailers or vehicle and trailer

Based on their guidelines even the new Toyota Tundra (if it's tow capacity was 1# more) would be classified as a commercial vehicle requiring a different endorcement on your DL... and that's not even close to being a 1 ton vehicle.

Here's a bit more
Quote:

A Noncommercial Class A license is required if you tow:

a travel trailer weighing over 10,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) which is not used for hire.
a fifth-wheel travel trailer weighting over 15,000 lbs. GVWR which is not used for hire.
a livestock trailer that is not for hire, weight over 10,000 lbs. GVWR but not over 15,000 lbs. GVWR, and is operated within 150 miles of the farm by a farmer to transport livestock.

I was talking to a Nevada Dodge Dealer today and he said that if I buy the Dodge 3500 I would need a commercial drivers license to register and drive in California because it is a 1 ton. He also said I would need commercial insurance which is more expensive. Does anyone know anything about this?

Does Dodge make a SRW 3500 with 4 doors, like GM does?

No, you do not need a commercial license, but ...

On the insurance issue, you might need commercial insurance.

If you have a 4-door, 4-wheel pickup with a GVW less than 10,000 lbs
in California, it can be registered as a passenger car. (This came
about when we adopted the 6-year, 60 lbs requirement for child car
seats. In order to comply with the law, my neighbors with 3 young
children had to buy 2 new cars.) This is the exact reason you
can get a 3500 SRW 4-door pickup from GM: the GVW is 9900 lbs. All
duallies and all 2-door pickups need to be registered commercial,
except those "permanently altered to be housecars".

My 2500 HD has 4 doors, 4 wheels, and came home from the dealership
registered as a passenger car. I have never paid a commercial
weight fee. No commercial driver's license, either.

Yet there certainly is a thing called a "non-commercial class A"
license, which you certainly do need for driving large RVs, and
pulling large trailers. Recently the CHP has been ticketing and
towing for this issue, mostly at Pismo.

Most 1-tons are duallies, so you probably need commercial plates,
pay weight fees, and might need commercial insurance. If you pull
heavy, you might want a non-commercial class A license.

What type of licence do you need when you rent a uhaul moving truck?

also did you have to prove no animals were harmed in the building of that one ton truck.

Unless it GVW is over 26,000 a class C will do.

I have a one ton pickup I use in my business and for personal use and we have a one ton cargo van for business use as well. Only a regular class D auto driver license is required to drive a one ton and only regular auto liability insurance is required to carry on the truck. The plates are commercial and we pay extra fees based on the GVWR of the trucks. About all the commercial plate means is the state collects extra money for it and we are allowed to park in a yellow commercial vehicle loading zone if we go downtown. Big whoopie.

I didn't know there was a class D or about parking in yellow. Never know what I'm gonna learn here, its like a box raisins.

It is not the weight dealio as much as it is open bed that causes the commercial plates. An E350 CAN have private plates and a Chevy Luv HAS to have commercial plates. At least that is how it was explained to me back in the day.

Not a whole lot of logic there, but it is CA!!!

An E350 cargo van gets commercial plates, as does an E250 or E150 cargo van (We have both E350 and E150 cargo vans).

An E250 or E350 passenger wagon doesn't get commercial plates (unless it's being used commercially by a passenger carrier company).

My Dodge Ram50 mini truck does get commercial plates, as does my F350 CrewCab pickup, regardless of how they are used.

None of them get commercial insurance, regardless of the plate.

Excuse me, I got my alphabet mixed up. Class C is the regular auto driver license (had to check my license to be sure!).

True, California is the least logical state on this side of the river.
